NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1926. Q) HERE 15 VIEW OF LONDON EDITORS g Editorial Comment Made on U. §. and War Debts London, July 22 (P)—The debate in* the house of commons on Mon- day regarding the British debt set- tlement and despatches from the United States reporting irritation there at the continued clamor of a section of the British and French press with reference to the attitude of the United States in the situation, has led to extended editorigl discus- sion of the matter here. It is clear that there is uneasi- ness in some quarters lest what is considered the continual carping over the position of the United States will lead to widespread ill fewinng in Great Britain and that country. Trouble is Feared “The current controversy is caus- ing trouble and it may make mis- chief,” says the Daily Telegraph which, while criticizing the Ameri- can standpoint, words its strictures more mildly than some of th newspapers. The Daily Telegraph deplores the fact that the United States rejected Great Britain pro- posals for all-around cancellation of “The rejection,” says the news- paper, “was as much a calamity as its acceptance would have been the just triumph of American disinter- estedness to the end of time, xxx American has not helped Europe sh might, or as she ought or & eventually she will when he public opinion takes a more generc and less strictly mercantile view.” Debt Cancellation The Westminster Gazette, while believing it would have been bet- ter for everybody, including the United States if been cancelled, attacks on the all war debts had deprecates violent “American shylock," who it says are worse than usele: and calc ted to lessen whatever ance there may be that the United tes will play a helpful part The newspaper set§ forth appre- ciatively what it understands to be he American viewpoint and adds We do not believe this attitude will last forever, but it certainly will not be changed by lamenations and re- criminations from Europe.” The Daily Mail, which for some has published vehement a s on the position taken by t. States and lampooned Uncle shylock,” reiterates o that the disturb- in European finances is due to e debt claims of the United States. This journal welcomes the coming to Europe of Andrew W.
