Thus costly and uneco- nomic duplication of facilities such as power stations, tracks and overhead lines is avoided. public ser- As a result, public utilities franchises are ceasing to be of vital consequence. In many States it is the practice to prohibit competition where an existing utility is rendering adequate service at reasonable rates. All this adds stability to the public utilities, giv- ing them a unique standing from the investor’s point of view.
