PARENTS OPFOSED TO GIRLS SHOKNG Overwhelming Opposition Ex- pressed in B, 0, Papils' Homes Boston, Dec, 19 — That the par- ents of New England are strongly opposed to the practice of smoking among thelr daughters at college is the conclusion drawn from the re- sults of a questionnaire sent to 675 parents of students at the Boston Unlversity college of Practical Arts and Letters by Dean T, Lawrence Davis, the latter announced today. Ot the 675 parents, 4560 had re-' plied when the last figures were rawn up, und of these only one wd failed to take a stand vehe- meptly against smoking by college nirls, The ione dissenter wrote that was not a question of girls' smon- &, but of either boys or girls be- | ng permitted to smoke. The writer fit that for girls to smoke was no worse than for boys. Dean Davis' referendum among the parents of the students of the College of Practical Arts and Let- ters is the first undertaken by any college 80 far as 18 known. At the time the referendum was started Dean Davis announced that the rulc against smoking at the colleg: would not be abrogated no mattcr how the parents voted. Smoking by women students {s prohibited at the other departments of the uni- | versity also, “It {s my contentlon that young people are more lable than others to be swaycd by fads or by unwholc some propaganda,” Dean Davis said in explaining his stand. “*No mat ter how desirable absolute studcnt government might be in theory, I believe that somewhere along the 1 more mature minds should as- st in shaping the {dcals and stand ards of the college. In my to the parents I asked them to tell me old fashioned' in my notions.” TABLET 10 HARK LAKD = GIVEN T0 LAFAYETTE] Icho of an msmrlr;; Incident of Years Ago Heard in Florida | Assembly.
