GENERAL ELECTION SET FOR TONORROY New Jersey Has Gubernatorial Gontest--New York Names Mayor (Pr—Several Washington, Nov. contests which have attracted wide, . attention, notably the gubernatorlal fight in New Jerscy and the mayor- alty campalgns in New York city, Boston and Detroit, will be settled tomorrow at the polls. Balloting in 13 States ‘While Tuesday's elections are re- ferred to as general, there will be balloting in only 13 states with state-wide voting in only five of these. Besides New Jersey, Virginia will be the only state to elect a gov- ernor, and in only one other—Penn- sylvania—is there a state office at issue, that of judge of the supreme court. Two members of congress are to be chosen to fill vacancics now exlst- ing from the third New Jersey and third Kentucky districts. While there is a vacancy in the senate from North Dakota, this will not be filled, as Governor Sorlee has de- clined to order a special election to determine the successor to the late Senator Ladd. The Ku | Klux Klan figures in the Detroit | mayoralty fight, in which Mayor $mith is standing for re-election. Mayors also are to be elected in Pittsburgh, Louisville, Indianapolis | and scores of other cities. Besides that in Indianapolis there ara 100 such contests in Indiana alone. New Jersey Flection, New Jersey is to select seven state senators and the entire lower house of the state legislature; Virginia is 10 elect an emire general assembly; New York Is to elect members of the lower house, and Kentucky is to se- lect 76 members of the state hou and senate. New York i Onto are the only| states to pass on constitutional | amendments. The most important of those before the New York voters| proposes bond fssues of $300,000,000 to eliminate grade crossings and $100,000,000 for permanent fmprove- ments. Boston Also Elects, The mayoralty contest in Boston is the only one in Massachusetts. | Such contests are fairly general lowever, in Michigan and Utah.! There will' be a municipal election in Kansas City, Mo., which is to go un- der its new form of government and also one in San Francisco, where the principal issue is whether the city is| to purchase a street railway line at a cost of $35,000,000. | Washington is the thirteenth state | in which there will be a balloting. | This will be confined to Grant coun- | ty where a vacancy in the state legis- lature 18 to be filled. No tweed cap adorns his head, and the hair seems seldom brushed. But he gets there just the same. In addition to winning both of these tournaments and several minor ones, Compston was the only Briton other than Ted Ray to glve any worth-while competition to the American ors again in the British Open champlonship. Compston plays to win, and, unlike many others, he admits it. The fact simply exudes from him. With a scowl not unlike the one Dempsey | carrles into the ring, the Manches- ter giant gets up on the first tee | and by viclous practice swings and his whole menacing mien, seems to frighten all but the bravest of op- | ponents.
