ROVAL LIBRARY NOT GIVEN OVER Hohenzollern Books Arg Claimed " by State Berlin, Oct. 23 (M—The family library of the Hohenzollerns, com- prising about 100,000 volumes, be- sides numerous maps, musical pub-. lications and eketches, forms part of the Hohenzollern inventory clalmed by the German republic as being the property of the state, Pending the ultimate decision of the courts the library remalins in the former Royal castle at Berlin, The library was founded September 20, 1862, when the private Iibraries of Frederic the Great, Kings Fred- «riec Willlam 11, T1I and IV, and the small but valuable personal library of Queen Loulse of Prussia, were Incorporated. Prlor to that date these varlous Ilbrarles were kept at different castles. The originator of the 1idea of founding a librafy of the Hohenzol- lerns was Duvinage, the librarian of Frederic Willlam IV, who sug- gested the plan to the king in 1859. His suggestion, however, did not meet with the approval of the treasury of the royal household and it was not until 1862 that his successor, Dr. Dohme, overcame this opposition. By 1871 the new llbrary con- tained 10,000 volumes. At the sug- gestion of Emperor Willlam™ 1, a number of contributions from the library were made to other I- bra From 1580 to 1888 the Hohen- zollern library was steadily en- larged, re-arranged and recata- logued and with the ascension of Emperor William IT, and the new librarian, Walter Robert Tornow, it was given an entirely new lease.
