| JUBILEE PROGRAM [PROVE ALIBI AND | OF WOMAN'S CLUB FlItleth Anmversary Observed &With Tnteresting Exercises l‘ The Woman's eclub of New Brifain held its October meeting at the Bhuttle Meadow Mcadow club on Tuesday afternoon. The occasion was one of interest to all those present, m jng the 60th anniversary of the founding of the organization, Vari ous committees had been busy deco- rating the clubhouse with golden leayes and chrysanthemums, while the figures 1875-1925 were plainly marked on a background of the golden foliage autumn, The president, Mrs. John C. Loomis, presided, and after a cordlal greet- ing to all, announced that the pro- gram for the afternoon was In oharge of Mrs. Harrls B. Humason and Mrs. George W. Traut. The historic paper, prepared with much care and thought by Mra. ¥umason, was llstened to with keen Interest, as she took her audlence back 50 years and even beyond, telling of the first organiz of fon, as early as 1868, Island, Wisconsin and Ohio, wom- en’s educational clubs were formed a few years later. but Interest chiefly centered in the Woman's elub of Grand Rapids, Michigan, started in 1878, as being the mother to the Woman's club of New Britain. | Mrs. Thomas Conklin bhad re- tarned from a visit to that city in| 4875, and soon interested her friends here In forming an sassociation to ®e JMown as the “Ladies’ Literary Hoclety.” At that time, New Britain was a town of only 10,000 Inhabi- tants, having had its charter &carce- 1y five years, but its educational ad- vantages were being rapldly de- weloped, and the city's growth was assured. It was a new ldea to Tiave a strictly woman's organization and thirteen women banded together on Monday, October 4, 1875, as oharter members, with the following efficers: President, Mrs. Mahlon J. Woodruff; vice-president, Mrs. Thomas Conklin; secretary, Mrs. George Clary. At the second meeting 83 mem- bers were enrolled, certain “rule: and regulations” were adopted and varjous committees were appointed. For 17 yeara the Literary soclety met at the homes of its members, and then, having outgrown such accommodations, the meetings were Held in Odd Fellows' hall on Main street, and later at the Institute, In 1892 the name was changed from the Ladies' Literary society to the more formal one of the Wom- an’s’' Club of New Britain, and at the same time printed programs were introduced at the meetings. The membership of the club has fncreased in a remarkable manner from 142 in the year 1900, to 471 at the present time. Twenty-four women have served as president, bringing much of noble inspiration and unselfish de- votion to the club, in furthering its foterests, and making the or; tion a real power for good in vlw city. Mrs. Charles E. Mitckell and Mrs. Bdward L. Prior, the only charter members of the Woman's club now living in New Britain, were present, and Mrs. Mitchell gave an interes ing account of the flrst mecting 60 years ago held at the house of Mrs. Peck on Pear! street. She also read a letter from Mrs. Mahlon J. Wood- ruft the first president, sending gratulations and expressions of her continued interest in the club. A fitting tribute was paid to the memory of Miss Alice Gray Stanley, by Mre. Willlam P. Felt who voiced the feeling of the club membership, in expressions of loving appreciatior of her long connection with the as a loyal and devoted member as waell as president during four vear Several of the younger of the club in costumes half a cen- tury old, gave a very realistic p trayal ef the first mesting of “The Titerary society’”, rendering in a delightful manner parts of the musl cal and dramatic programs of for- mer year.
