Mrs, Hance was the tnnocent vietlm of the affair, the murderers of her hushand evidently killing her to prevent any chance of her dentifying them, For a long time before his death, Hance's farm served as a stopping place for criminals, including burg- lars and rum runners, Chapman told his attorneys, and the dead man was known to have given squeals to the police that resulted in the apprehen- slon of several of them. Chapman sald that without a doubt, the death of Hance was retribution for evi- dence he had glven the authoritles, but he laughed at the idea that it had anything to do with Hance's testimony against him. He gafd that the testimony Hance gave at the trial in Hartford did not have any- thing to do with his conviction, for 2!l the Hoosler farmer did was to {dentify him as a man who had «opped at the Hance farm under the name of Miller, and who was in the party that had the high pow- ered machine found on Church street after the burglary of the Davidson & T.eventhal store.
