H. B, CUMMING Surgeon General, United States Public Health Bervice Patients who suffer from any type of hay fever may obtain reliet from thelr symptoms by aspending the period during which they usually suffer in a locality where the plant or plants whose pollen affects them do not grow, For example, those who suffer from the rag weed or fall type of hay fever obtain relef on the Paci- flc coast, in northern New Hamp- shire, on the Furopean continent, or in various mountain resorts which are free from rag weed, Since most patients cannot change their residence each year for ap- proximately two months out of the 12, they must seek reliet by other means, During the hay fever season eon- siderable relief may be obtalned if simple precautions are followed. Strenuous exercise such as tennis and baseball should be avolded as unusual exertion Induces vigorous breathing and correspondingly in- creases the dose of pollen inhaled. The sleeping room should be kept closed during the fay to exclude as much of the pollen-laden air as pos- sible. Upon retiring the windows should be opened, since the damp- ness of the evening air and the lessened breeze will allow but a relatively small amount of pollen to gain access to the seeping room. Hay fever patients who suffer from distressing eyve symptoms may find relief by wearing amber glasses. During the past nine or ten years medical prophylaxis for hay fever cess, Successful attempts have been made to treat these sensitized indi- | viduals by injeetions with extracts of | the pdllens to which they are sensi- tive This treatment brings about a desensitization of the patlent, or in considerahle dose of pollen, At the present time it may be said thut a large majority of patients 5o treated are benefited and that & comsider- able number experience varying de- grees of relief. Tt happns also, fortunately, that | the asthma which frequently ap-| pears in the course of the hay fever | and, which is most dreaded by the | patient, is most regularly benefited | by these infections. ! Tt is important that those who! suffer from hay feier understand | that they should present themselves | to their physicians for medical| propiylactic treatment about three | months before their symptoms usu- | ally begin.
