NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, SATURDAY MARCH 28, 1925, — NEWS OF NEW BRITAIN CLUBS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES — MISS PHYLLIS L. NEWLANDS Miss Newiand’s engagement to Harold F. Latham, son of Mr. and Mrs, Frederick W. Latham of this city has been announced SOCIAL HAPPENINGS ABOUT TOWN On account of holiday exodus from universities, colleges, and preparatory schools the pre-Easter days bring a concen- tration of entertainments that will mark it as a period to be remembered, There was a time when the social leaders of the fashionable world curtailed, to a certain degree, the round of pleasure that continued for so many weeks before Ash Wednesday, whose advent marks the beginning of the Lenten season, and is supposed to bring a halt, so far as gay life is concerned, but nowadays with the schools closing for their spring vacations at any time the parties, dances and social gatherings are many. To be sure, most of the larger ones are for the purpose of aiding philanthropic or charitable insti- tutions—a laudable purpose, surely. * R Interest this week centered in the United Charities drive for funds and its astendant luncheons which, occurring every day, disputed prominence with bridge parties and social life.i Always at this season of the year a large group of men and women of the town are commandeered to work on various teams in aiding charity organizatioas of this city, and this week they have spent a large portion of their days canvassing the city. ¥ % ¥ Bright skies and the touch of spring in the air has made the last week a delightfal one to the lover of outdoor sports, the golfer and hiker. The fishing season which opens on Wednesday, April 1, holds interest for many and those who have summer camps are already planning week-end parties and even one-day fishing excursions. With spring coming on in earnest there is a general letting up of club meetings and we find more and more folks turning to outfoor life. This week saw the annual meeting of the New Britain Woman's Club and by early May practically all of the various clubs and organizations will have had their annual meetings, election of officers and will be ready to open a new year in the fall. * * » Of course at this time of the year one's thoughts turn to the spriag bride who from now on will hold #ke: center of interest. One of the first post-Easter brides will be Miss Irene Swift, who will marry Harold Herrick of New York City on Saturday, April 18, On the same day, Miss Mildred Torell will wed Edward Weigand.
