Issued in two volumes, the new version is known as the Shorter Bible. The quotation in other versions of the Bible about David dealing out “a cake or bread and a good piece of flesh and a flagon of wine,” ap- pears in the Shorter Bible as “a roll of bread, a portion of meat and a cake of raisins.”” The prophet Isalah's reference to the children of Israel looking to other Gods and ‘“loving flagons of wine™ appears in the new Bible as “although they turn to oth- er Gods and loved to eat rafsincakes at their festivals.” The Shorter Bible, however, con- taing the phrases, “wine is'a mock- er,” “strong drink s turbulent.” e look not on wine when it s red" and “be careful not to drink any wine or intoxicating drink."” Hugh ¥, Fox, editor of the Perl- scope, an anti-prohibition publica- tion, criticlsed the new Bible for its manner of reference to wine, “Either the word has been deleted, wherever the Bible glves it favorable mentlon,” he sald, “or its meaning | has been changed.” New Headings. The editors of the Shorter Bible also have written new headings for varlous chapters, The song of Solo- mon 1§ eéntitled “Love and Mar- riage,* the characters being *The oV “The Maiden,” "The Bride- groom” and the “Bride.” The new edition was translated by Charles Foster Kent, Woolsey pro- fessor of hiblical literature at Yale, in collaboration with Prof. C. T. Torrey of Yale; H. A, Sherman, head of the religious dgpartment of Seribner's; ¥rederick Harrls of tho Y. M. C. A, and Ethel Cutler of the Y. W. C. A. Mr. Sherman asscrted the Shorter Bible was free from any prohibition bias: “We thought in terms of scholar- ship,” he said. “At no time did any question of liquor or prohibition come up.” Isabella Circle, N.
