METHODIST CHURCH IS LOSING 0UT Doomed, Says Missionary, U- less It Readjusts Approach New York, ¥eb. 6,~Hundreds of | Methodist , churches in American citles “are slowly but surely dls- integrating morally and spliritually,’” Df, M. P, Burns, superintendent of city work for the board of home missions and church the Methodist Episcopal church, de- clared today at the opening of a two-day meeting of the regional council of cities for New York area under the auspices of the board, Dr. Burns also warned that these churches complete annihilation if they do not readfust their approach, program and message to the life and needs of the nelghbors in which they stand.” | Dr, Burns said if the church is to create a Christ-like soclal order fi| this world, “she must entrench her- self In the heart of every neighbor- hood. She must be the dominating and directing factor in the social, industrial, cfvic, political, intel lectual and religious lifo the people.” Dr. Burns enumerated “four grave obstacles which stand athwart the pathway of progress in connection with the kingdom of God.” One of these, he said, was the fact that “many of the leaders of the | Christian church turn a deaf ear to | the challenge of God respecting the evangelizing of our alien multitudes and pass by on the other side of the road, wagging their heads, de- nominating them as Dagoes, Sheenies and Chinks. The evangelizing of these foreign-speaking groups s unquestionably the obligation of the hour. They call this new and wonderful preparation “Joint-Ease” because the medical man who turned the trick, werked for years to perfect some low-priced remedy that would really benefit the millions of people who have ane or more joints that need helpful attention. Other obstacles, sald Dr. Burns, are “a lack of traineq workers to carry out a soclal, recreational, edu- cational and spiritual prozram and a ,constantly changing ministry instead of a continuous pastorate.'” Dr. Ralph W, Sockman, pastor of the Madison avenue church in this city, outlined the general methods and the peculiar message of the city church as contrasted with the coun- ti/ church, He pointed out that the city flock varies far more widely in *its mental, eultural and financlal capabilities, “We need church statesmen tall enough to sce over denominational fences,”. Dr. Sockman said in dis- cussing the necessity of ‘organized efforts of the different depomina- tlons. He also advocated the aband- |onment of unuded churches “lying |around like nest eggs laid by our senti- faithful souls.” Bryan’s Child ment’s sake by a {Daughters of Founders To Meet in Bridgeport The Connecticut chapter, Daugh- ters of Funders and Patriots of | America will hold its annual meet- ing in Bridgeport on Kebruary 20, | when reports of officers will be given | and the election of officers and | councillors held.
