e e —— POINGARE DENIES HE GAUSED STRIFE Publishes Letters Repudiating Attacks Made Hy The Associated Press Paris, Nov. 17.~Iformer Premier t'olncare today answered accusations that he was partly responsible for the world war by publishing through the Havas Agency letters from Jules Cambon, Stephen Pichon and Emile Dagechner in which the three men repudiate entirely the late Georges Louls' supposed conversations, recorded in high diar extracts fiom which were printed by L'oeuvre vesterday, M. Poincare also casts doubts on the authenticity of the diary and «ays some day he may supplement official revelations of the pre-war perfod with *private econtemporary Jetters written by Paul Cambon, (ierard, (former American ambassa- dor to Germany) and many other ithoritative persons, and by Georges Louis himself,"” *“They will strengthen further cor- rections T am sending you,” M. Polncare added In transmitting the documents, “‘and at the same time show fully the continuity of the ef- forts made by all the cabinets of the republic in the interest of peace.” Jules Cambon, who was amt dor to Germany when the war be- an, speaking for himself and his re- cently deceased brother, Paul Cam- Lon, sald In his letter that Louls' 1lleged diary notes were ‘“‘mani- festly erronecous,” and added: “I have no recollection of having met Georges Louls during the war. However, if T gaw him, his memory ive to our conversation a char- acter it did not have. My brother is no longer here to give his testi- but T can say for him what ay for myself: We did our best, he and 1, working with you to ward off the imminent perll of war, and we wera certain that not the slight- est responsibility for the events of 1914 could be placed on the govern- ment of France.” Remembers Clearly. Eimile Daeschner recently appoint- ed French Ambassador to the United as | States, who was chlef of cabinet of the fo n ministry in 1912, says In his letter that he has the clearest recollection as to the use of the sceret funds which he handled in his post under Premier and Ioreign Minister Poincare. “I can therefore emphatically deny the allegations in the documents you submitted to me regarding the use you are supposed to have made of those funds In your relations with the press,” Mr, Daeschner wrote, “I do not hesitate,” he added, “to laffirm that you gave no subsidy or !allocation in any form to any mem- ber of the press,” He recalled that | the secret funds at that time amount | ed to only 1,000,000 francs gold and had to be used for many purposcs, 50 that any balance which could |have been used really secretly |“would have been extremly small and altogether Inadequate for it to [ nave been possible for you to make use of, as charged.” M. Daeschner also declares that Poincare’s purpose in going to St. Petersburg In 1912 was largely to | smooth out misunderstandings due |to the attitude of M. Iswolsky, the Russian ambassador to rance, and the lack of co-operation between the Krench ambassador to Russia {and Sergius Sazanoff, who shortly | before that had succeeded Iswolsky as Russian foreign minister, Stephen Pichon, ¥French foreign minister in 1913, in his contribution | to the correspondence, sald: “The remarks Georges Louis attri- |butes to me are so improbable that |1 hardly need to deny them. I af- | firm to you that I never sald nor thought things so contrary to the truth and to the sentiments T have never ceased to have for you. X x X I know definitely that as premier, | minister of foreign affairs and presi- dent of the republic “you always worked to maintain peace.” M. Plchon further remarked that he regretted “that Clemenceau was | not sooner called to the direction of our policy during the war,” but ex- plains that M. Polncare felt he could not precipitata a cabinet erisis in order to bring the “tiger” to power, M. Pichon concludes: “I eannot countenance the ene- mies of France who are trying to sabotaga ths peace after having de- liberately provoked the war, using information so contrary to the evi- dence to place us in an unfortunate position before the world, and deny absolutely such lamentable | fabrications.” 6L0C0 NOW ON SALE AT WILL REBUILD BURNED PROPERTY {Erie Road Waterfront at Jersey City Razed-Loss $1,600,000 Jersey City, N.
