PAPYRUS FROM OLD DAYS I3 UNCOVERED Is Believed to Date From Year| 300 A. D. 1 — YLondon, Nov, 13, — A crumpled | leaf of papyrus, belleved to date from about 300 A, D. upon which is written more than 30 verses of the 26th chapter of the Gospel of Mat- | thew, was discovered recently by H, D. Bell, an expert of the British museum, while sorting a collection | of papyrus consisting of 487 items | destined for the library of the Uni- | versity of Michigan, The text is sub- | staptially complete except at the bot- | tom of the leaf where a corner had been torn off, so that the ends of tour lines and the lowest line on the right hand page are gone, and also the beginning of the four lines at the bottom of the page on the op- posite page. The passage commences with the words thus translated in the King James version, verse 19: ‘'(As) Jesus had appointed them, and they made ready for the passover.” The in- complete line at the end contains the words from verse 52, “Shall perish with the sword,” The passage is of intrest to all dendminations because of its account of the mz’ supper and the betrayal. The text is carefully written. Per- haps the most striking difference from the King James versions in | {new covenant-blood," 6 28, where the translation is: r Lhis I8 my blood of the new testament," Moffat's translation reads: "This means my blood, the Here the text of the papyrus, In agreement with certain anclent manuscripts and some editions, omits the “new."” “Otherwise," sald Professor I'rany cls W. Kelsey of the University of Michigan recently In deseribing the discovery, “the text s substantially that with which all are familfar.” |41 Passengers Landed After Eventful Voyage New York, Nov, 13.~—TForty-one passengers from the United Fruit |steamer Zacapa, which went aground November 9, off Gireat Inagua, Ba- hama Islands, arrived today in t steamer Teno.
