POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT POLITICAL ADVERTISEMEN REPUBICAN RALL. HIRAM BINGHA CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR FLECTRIFIED SAND DESTROS CLOUDS Army Aviators Conduct Success- : Tul Experiments By The Associated Press. ‘Washington, Oct. 30 experiments in the destruction fogs and clouds by the use of elec- trifled sand are to be carried out, under government supervision, Bolling Field, Army airplanes equipped with the device patcnted by Dr. L. Francis Warren, of Har- vard university, have been detailed exclusively to that work and daily flights are to be made during the next six weeks to determine both the peace and war value in connec- tion with aviation. The two aviators who conducted the attack yesterday obtained a fair “bag” despite the extreme height of the clouds over the field. A group of officers, and eivilians from the ground eould follow without dif- ficulty the cutting off of a cape or peninsular of cloud and its subse- quent disintegration. Larger masses were criss-crossed with lanes shrough which the sun's rays shone to accellerated evaporation. Continue Experiments Dr. Warren described the work at Bolling fleld as a “mere continu- ation of the invariably successful ex- periments of the past three years.” “We have had nothing happen in the past three years,” he msserted, “to make us change our claims or our minds. We base our work on Jhe assumption that visibie forms of mofsture in the air, Ike mists, fogs, clonds, et cetera, were a form of colloidal suspension in gases and that they should be governed by the same general laws that prevail in colloidal action 1g liqulds and solide. ixtensive of at How Scheme Works “We fill the sand tanks on planes with 120 mesh silica sand. The planes being equipped for charging the sand elther positively or negatively by the turn of a lever; the sand impinging upon charging plates or falling through charging notzles and being scattered by the alr, driven back by the plane propeller. When a cloud is found to have a positive charge, we scat- the ter negatively charged particles at the extreme top; when it was found 10 have & negative charge we scatter positive charged particles at the top; and when it is found without any charge we first charge it as we 1iks and then Being it down by again moattering the opposite charged particles et cetera.” ““These tests have resulted in wome cases in uncanny manifesta- tHions. For ezample, on July § at abeut 2 o'clock of the afternoon, a frighttully heavy thunderstorm with almewt continu lightning Jay the south of Phillips fleld Chesapeakes bay.
