B. ubrey in the Meriden police court sterday. In each case the bond as set at $500. Mrs. Buell, bafore opening of the obbery case, was arraigned with iotor Redican, of Meriden, and ohn Kelley, of Wallingford, in con- | ing “murder,” Mrs. Joseph Hmielew- men, There were 450 signers of ection with a brawl which took 'ski attracted the attention of a po- the petition which in the preambio | Iplace last September 19 on Hicks venue, Meriden, and in which Cath- rine Whelan and Mary Then were he complainants. In this case the two men were jined $1 and. costs each on charges pf intoxication. Mrs. Buell's sen- ence, which was imposed after the obbery hearing, was a 60-dpy jail erm for assault and breach of the peace. Max Sanik, of 58 West street, New [Britain, was the complainant in the robbery affair, claiming that the quartet relieved him of $200 dur- ing a party on the outskirts of Meri- den early last Sunday morning. Meeting in a lunch cart in this city some time after midnight, the four men started out for a question- able resort in Yalesville, but they stopped in Meriden and took Mrs. Buell intg their car. Then they proceeded out on the Middletown road, stopping at a point mnear Black pond. Ater some discussion between Sanik and Mrs. Buell, it was claimed that the man's three com- panions seized him and forcibly took his money, leaving a single dollar. Counsel for the New Britain trio held that the entire affair was a drunken party and that the men were in no condition to form-an actual intent to commit a serious erime, asking for their discharge. Two New Britain policemen testi- | fied for the defense that they hadl seen the men before they left the Hardware City and that they were under the influence of liquor. L. J. Somers, representing Mrs. Buell, set up the claim that the woman was neither a principal in the crime nor an accessory, main- taining that her part of the affair mitting a holdup. During the taking of testimony from New Britain policemen, who, it was noted, had not deemed it necessary to arrest, the court re- marked that “getting drunk in New Britaln seems more of an accom- plishment than an offense." Prosecuting Attorney Henry Dry- hurst contended that all four should be bound over, in an address, which, though It was oratorical and even poetical In stressing some of the salient points, was replete with a humoroul sarcasm that caused the court to smile and the crowded court room to titter audibly. For Mrs. Buell, Mr. Somers gave notice of an appeol from the jail sentence, the court setting $250 as ball, FLEES AS HUSBAND THREATENS DEATH Woman in Night Clothes Leaves Home to Save Life Running to the street early this morning in her night clothes shout- | iceman who ran to the house to in« vestigate.
