Evidence which already has been gathered in an investigation, started last February by department of jus- tice men and prohibition agents, has revealed the existence of a New York and Canadian gang of pirates which sometimes actually seized ships and at other times collected insurance on cargoes which they represented as having been taken by pirates. The headquarteds of the band were in this city, acoording to Prohi- bition Director R. A. Merrick, and they operated out of Canada, ship- ping liquor from St. Jehn, N. B, presumably for Cuba or ‘Bermuda, but discharging the cargoes off Long Island. One such cargo was seized by pirates oft Long Island, Mr, Merrick said the inyestigation revealed, and was sold off Atlantic Highlands, N The members of the crew on the schooner Lutzen from which the liquor was stolen, were handcufted and held prisoners for more than two weeks while the liguor was being sold. After the cargo had been dis- posed of, the prisoners were taken to Bermuda and released. What be- came of the Lutzen has never been learned. John M. Isaacs, of Montreal, & member of the schooner's crew, furnished the Investigators with their information. Isaacs sald that a few days after the Lutzen arrived off Bay Shore, N, Y., a band of pirates, who had either stowed away or slipped ahoard from a speedboat, confront- ed the grew with pistols’ and made them prisoners. A man who said he was "Captain Ford,” according to Isaacs threaten- ed to “drill holes through anybody making trouble” and allowed the prisoners on deck only to take exer- cige.
