LAV GHOSTEVITS TENANT O HOUSE ~ Spirit of Crazy Woman Said (o Haunt English Mansion Chichester, Sussex, England, Sept. 12.—"The strange lady"” is the name of a ghost which constantly evicts tenants from a gharming old coun- try house not from from this city. Families come and ‘families go. Sometimes they stay for several " weeks, sometimes they remain for only 4 few days. One modern, up-to-date woman who leased the house pooh-poohed the idea that it was haunted and carsfuly kept all ghost stories away from her three young children. With in a few weeks the children com- plained to their mother that they did not like to play in their nursery because “the lady"” disturbed them. Finally the up-to-date and skepti- cal mother also saw the strange wo- man. She was unwilling to admit it at first, but boy and. girl of 16 and 17 respectively, who were visiting her, complained that they also had seen her. This female ghost has been seen by g0 many persons, or at least so many persons have imagined they eaw {t, that it has become well- known - to ghost specialists in all parts of England. The legend told in explanation of the appirition is ' that the house was owned by a cava- lier who during the Civil War took refuge in a secret chamber. His wife denfed to the Roundheads that he was in the building. They set fire to the house and the husband was suffocated. His wife lost her reason through the shock, and her spirit is supposed to hauwut the build ing in spite of the fact that it has bean rebuilt and little remains of the old mansion - GERMANS STILL CLING . 10 IMPERIAL " TITLES Imperial Vice-Consuls Out- of Ser- vice and Others Clutter Up Cards and Documents. Berlin, Sept, 12.—No country in the world, perhaps is as title-ridden as Germany. The nuisance has be- come so great that the federal gov- ernment intends to take a hand and try and bring about some sort of simplification and unification of the titles that are being awarded by the varfous department of government, federal, provincial and state. Before the war every man who did something unusual or who rendered a personal service to his fellow men or to the emperor was given a dec- oration and a title. Then came the revelution and all titles and decora- tions were supposed to have been wiped out. Holders of titles how- ever, merely printed the letters “A. D.” (ausser dienst, or out of ser- vice) behind their former titles, so that one still sees visiting cards with such designations as “Imperial vice- consul out-of-service” or ‘“minister of state out-of-service.” Then the various state govern- ments undertook to apply designa- tions to their officials as indications of rank in the service. In practice, these amounted to titles, so that Ger many now has a multiplicity of tities never known before. gln-lfrom Biliousness 8o does a bad taste In the mouth, coated tongue, dull headache, and unhealthy yellowish skin, these symptoms all tell the story of a disordered system and ygur Immediate need of a purely vege- table corrective to prevent infec- tion and a sick sp The proposed New Depot at the trestle will be a hig hoost for “Maple Hill” values and is bound to come in the near future. C. Scrugham, recently have read again the pages of the past in cavers near the famed Lehman Caves' and found them rich in archaeological lore. Figuring found on the rock wall of a cavern, said to be undeniably Aztec, leads Dr. B. F. Schappelle, archaeologist of the university, to beélieve the discovery one of the most important in recent years. The find- ing of pottery in the caves also moves the pottery line about 300 miles further north than any ever before found. Dr. gchappelle and Dr. Peter Frandsen, biologist, have employed men to assist in the work of ex- ayatibg:! ‘The party found it diffi- cult in places to discern the hiero- &lyphyes as cloudbursts had washed nuch debris Into the caverns. Hiero- glypHics Tésembling both Asztec and Egyptian work have been found and members of the party are oplimistic in predicting that a veritable under- ground city will be discovered.
