London, Aug. 22.—The reason for the shortage of eclergymen in the church of England was described in what he called “plain, blunt and even brutal language” by the Rev. N. P. Williams during a sermon he preached recently at Holborn, “The work of a clergyman is, in a great part, of a dull, trivial kind,” he sald. “It consists mainly in the sing- ing of choral offices which could be well rendered by a moderately effi- cient gramophone. The personality of the typical clergyman, developed by exclusive association with women and children, represents the sort of thing that no self-respecting boy wants to grow into.” SHORT CALENDAR DOCKET.
