COUZENS REFUSES | 10 PLEDGE BACKING Being “Bossed” in Senate Detroit, July 9. — Senator James Couzens of Michigan announcing his | Y candidacy for nomination at the Sep- | tember primaries to succeed himself, | in a formal statement today refused | to pledge his full support to President | Coolidge or either state or national | republican platform. He challenged | the right of party “hosses” to dictate | his course of action and made his bid | for the vote of Michigan electors on his past record for which, he said, he | had no apologies to make. | Asker by the chairman of the re- |sign a statement pledging his support | [fo the party platform and endorsing | President Coolidge, Senator Couzens veplied he could not do so. | “If complete adherence to the pro- | posals and policies of President Cool- | idge is the test of republicanism, there | are no republicans in the national congress,” he said. “I do not hel wge. it to be the desire of my constituents that I abjectly promise to follow | someone and do his bidding.” | “No candidate can endorse both the state platform and President Coolidge | 100 per cent,” he said, “because they are in a measure inconsistent with |each other. T helieve in party gov- ernment,” he said, “but so long as T am a member of the party 1 propose to have a voice in 1t and not he con- trotled by party | hosses or leaders.” 'FIRE BOARD 10 CALL FOR BIDS ON NEW PUMPER PR RS- 11 Award Contract For Machine At Special Meeting On | July 290 The clerk of the fire board was In- structed to call for bids for a new 750 gallon pumper, at a meeting of the board held last night. There was considerable discussion regarding the | purchase and Chairman J. E. R. Keevers told of his visit to the recent | show in Boston, where trucks of sev- | eral companies were on display., Bids will close on July when a special meeting of the hoard will be held. Plans for sanitary repairs in No. 1 | engine house were discussed and it was voted to have the city engineer draw up plans and specifications. Bids will also close at the special meeting on July 20, It was voted to enter into contract with John P. Maddon of Arch street, for the repainting and revarnishing of | Aerial Truck No. 1. The cost of the work will be $175. On recommnedation of Chairman Keevers Chief Noble and men of the department were commended for their work in the standardization of hose coupling threads. Mr. Keevers stated that this probably is a record, New Britain being the first city to get the job done so quickly. Chairman Keevers reported on the meeting of the water board on Mon- | day night. He said it was originally | the idea of that board to hire two men from the department to do the work of rethreading the hydrants in | compliance with the standardization | rules, but Chairman Keevers recom- | mended that the work be done by the | | water board and that the work he | | inspected daily by Chief Mechanic | Burke of Chief Nobie. | Chief Noble'was authorized to at- |tend the national convention of fire chiefs, which will be held in Buffalo, | |N. Y., in August. The chief thanked | the board for its kindness in allowing {him to attend this session. | Figures presented showed that the | department 1s in need of 950 feet of | 215 inch hose and 2560 feet of 3 inch | |hose. 1t was voted to petition the | common council te Snter into a con- | B tract for its purchase of the same.
