BANKER DENIES ANY PART IN ROBBERY Bellmore cashier Says He Was Not With Bandits New York, May 9. — Charles M. Vanderoef, ‘cashier of the National hank at Bellmore, L. 1, faces a United States commissioner today for ar- raignment on a charge of misappro- priation of $4,000 of the bank’s funds. He is expected to waive examination. The bank was robbed on April 4, and three men, John J. Slattery, pro- prietor of the Old Homestead hotel, Astoria, L. 1., Ambrose Ross and Stan- iey Klvana, all of whom were arrest- ed this week, were indicted yvesterday for the murder of Ernest Ly Whitman, a bond salesman, wio was shot down 48 the bandits fled from the bank. Other startling developments werve | the closing of the bank by the federal:| lank examiner and the discovery that the money taken by the bandits was in federal reserve notes which had ar- rived at the bank scarcely an hour b fore the holdup. This and other cir- cumstances led the authorities to in- | vestigate the posfllblm_v of the rob- | bery having been an “inside job."” | Vanderoef made vigorous and, in- ! dignant disavowal of all connections with participants in the robbery. e told Assistant United States District Attorney Frieman that he never had | seen or heard of the bandits and scouted the possibility of information 1egarding the notes having come from any of the bank's employes, His own peculations which he was reported to have placed at over $30,000 were | ptompted by fondness for Broadway | lite, he said. | The cashier was reported, however, | as having admitted making freuuem.l visits to the Newbridge Inn, North Bellmore, owned by Barney \\'eignnd," a; friend of Slattery. John J. Bedell, president of the bank, said the closing was merely a neans of facilitating the work of the examiners and that no depositor would lose a cent. The cashier probably will go before | the federal grand jury on Tuesday when, according to George M. ILevy, his counsel, he would waive immun- ity and make a “clean breast” of the whole matter, LETTERS PRODUCED IN WHEELER CASE Govt.
