Cambridge, Mass, May 2-—Edward Kirby, captain and star of Cornell University's track team, faces a for- midable task in his efort to retain the intercollegiate mile championship, blue ribbon event of the forty-eighth annual I. C. A. A. A, meet at the Har- vard Stadium, May 30 and 31. Not only will Kirby face an un- nisually strong field, but the frail Itha- can will go to the mark with handicap of having been idle most of the | the time since the last outdoor sea- | son. Due to lllness he was kept out of the indoor intercollegiate and most of his team’s board, meets, while in one of his few starts he was beaten by John Watter, of Harvard, in a tri- angular meaet at Boston. { Connolly, of Penn State Chief among Kirby's rivals will be | Schuyler Enck of Penn State, the in- door mile champion and world's re- cord holder att 800 meters, but Wat- ters, Thomas Cavanaugh, of Boston College, und Hobart Betts, of Prince- ton, also loom as strong candidates. The latter three are sophomores, ‘ | with Watters holding forth unmulnl promise as a distance star. ’Ingn(hxr | with Mal Douglas, Yale captain, Wil- liam Eiliott, of Stanford, amd Jack Ross, of University of California, they complete a field that promises to push the victor to close to record time. The only 1923 point scorers on this list are Kirby and Douglas, who fin- ished third. The Cornellian's victory lin 4:17 4-5 was one of the most bril- liant eollege performances of the year, proof of which is that it marked the seventh time that 4:19 had been since 1876. It was not until 1909 that the mile record was put below that level w. C. Paull, of Pennsylvania, who was clocked in the same time as Kirby. John Paul Jones, greatest of all Cor- nell distance stars, ushered In a re- cord-shattering streak in 1911, lower- ing the time that year to £:15 2-5 and in 1913 to the present record of 4:14 , after his famous dead heat with orman Taber, of Brown, in 1912 Sinee then the most sensational per- formance has been that of another Ithacan, 1. V. Windnagle, who coered the distance in 4:15 in 1916. Jimmy also have o beaten 4:19. Kirby thus will carry on where a long line of Cornelllans have blazed a path to athletic glory. The Ithacans, under Jack Moakley, have captured nine mile championships and shared in holding a tenth, more than any other rival. Pennsylvania has won eight, Harvard seven, Princeton six, Yale four and Weslyan three, while seven other colléges have furmished one or two winners.
