NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, -MONDAY, APRIL 28 1924 s, 0 THIS 15_BICYCLE WEEK | APRIL 26th to MAY 3rd, Both Inclusive . portance. A number of committees will also report on their activities at Calls Attention o ReSTiCtions 'icnie" s wins™ 5 Dustvess sersion | Forbidding Their Construction William L. Hatch has written Chairman D. L. Nair of the common | council commi on ordinances urging that-a change be made in the present ordinance governing the consruction of guruges. Mr. Hatceh's letter tollows: “The present ordinance prohibits a built or a buiiding made ge, within 00 feet of a church or schoolhouse. This is very proper in a residential se n, but iy tne business sceton it prac- ctically cuts out a great deal ot the possible locations for garages, and prohibit rages from being built in just the place most suituble for that class of building. “I am enclosing herewith, ity may, and have shown in black ap- proximately the area in which a garage cannot be built under the present erdinance. You will see that after cutting out the ground oceu- pied by business blocks and factoric there is hardly a place within a re sonable distance from Main stre where a garage can be built, as lo as the present ordinance is in force, For instance, nearly all of the block bounded by Church, Elm, Chestnut and Main reet is ered by this 300 foot disirict. Alse the block be- tween Hungerford court and Arch| strect, and between Arch street and the normal school, the block be-| tween the railroad tracks and Church street, and the block between Wash- ington strect and Jigh street, and alzo the block between Walnut street and West Main street is largely cov- ered by the ordinance. Both sides of Main street, north of the tracks is largely in the® 00 foot dis- trict, *1 therefore think the ordinance prohibiting garages within 300 feet of a church or school house should apply only to the residential scctions of the city. “There is another matter T wish to| call your attention to. T'hat js, where the ordinance provides that no pri- vate garage shall be constructed so as to provide floor s ¢ of more than 270 squarc ach room. As a matter of faet great many private garages arc t with room for two cars, and metimes with room for three g, but without a partitions. 1 should not waut, for in- stance, a partition in my garage, separating the two cars, would not be as convenient to care for the cars in that case, 1 think some othdt wording could be devised that would protect residential - tions from public garages o enough for two or possibly three ears, without compelling the owner to put up a partition between the cara.” Friday Night Social At Washington School On Friday evenin May 2, at 8 eo'clock, thg Washing school l'ar- ents and Teachers' s ation will hold a meeting in the anditorium of | the school, The speakers of the eve- ning will be Mayor A.
