DAUGHERTY HEARING RESUMES ON. WED. Tliness of Sen. Wheeler Occa§wns Delay in Scandal Case Washington, March 24. — [Further hearings in the senate investigation of Attorney General Daugherty to- day were postponed until Wednesday. The postponement was due to the iliness of Senator Wheeler, democrat, Montana, the committee pmmuu;r. and to conflicting other committee members, Senator Wheeler is cor bed with a severe cold. Another member, Senator Moses, republican, | New Hampshire, was engaged the opening of a new investigation into Rio Grande land transactions. | Still another, Senator Jones, republi- can, Washington, was called out of the city. Chairman Brookhart said that the nquiry would proceed on Wednes- day, even if Senator Wheeler cannot return, When the committee resumes Wed- nesday it hopes to conciude with the testimony and cross-examination of Miss Roxie Stinson, divorced wife of Jess Smith, dead friend of the attor- ney general. Much to Be Sifted A variety of alleged “deals” invol- ving whskey permits, fight film distr bution, narcotic drugs and political ! support, remaining the principal | items on the Daugherty investigating | committee’s program. In addition, the committee has on | its hands the dispute with the attor- ney general's brother, M, 8. Daugh- erty, over its attempt to examine all | accounts amounting to more than 00 on the books of the Midland National bank of Washington Court House, Ohio, of which he s president. | The banker has insisted that the 9‘-I amination be confined to accounts| known to be relevant to the inquiry. The possibility that Mrs, Mabel Walker Willebrandt, assistant attor- | rey general, might cross-examine | Miss Roxie Stinson, divorced wife of | the late Jess Smith, on behalf of Daugherty today helped to pack the | hearing room early with a more than usually curlous crowd. Miss Stinson | had not completed her direct testi- timony when she left the stand Sat- | urday, but was close to the ordeal of | eross-examination with indications | pointing to a duel of feminine wits if duties before the federal grand jury did not prevent Mrs, Willebrundt from | appearing for her chief, Besides Miss Stinson, William A, | Orr, who has been mentioned in con- nection with the alleged fight film and | whiskey permit “deals” and ¥red C.
