D, 2 “Behold 1 Bring You Good Tid- ings of Great Joy Which Shall be to all The People.” Jesus Christ, the Lord of life, was born in a cattle shed and was laid in a manger. In such rude surroundings was cele- brated the fiyst Christmas. The festival, begun thus where roads had no heginning or end and every trall ran out across the - wilderness or over the shifting sands, where vegetation ceased and the fierce sun-glare blinded the traveler, is the same festi- val we today celebrate with snow and holly and mistletoe and open fire. Glorious indeed, is the course this festival has run. ¥ The Baron's Hall, the grim boar's héad brought by green- clad archer, great mugs, flaming pudding and carols roared from deep throatz — that was the Christmas of Merrie England. Pium porridge, a savory goose, Christmas pye, and state- ly hymn—that for old Scotia. A haunch of venison; the wary gobbler foraged by daring Pilgrim at risk of arrow, deli- cate squash, tart cranberry, the march under guard to Church, and service of severe reverence and deep solemnity — that marked the Christmas of the Mayflower band. Under the wide-arching sky: chapparal, cactus, sand and sagebrush; wolves howling, lurking savage a roaring campfire, a roasted jack rabbit or two—and the frontiersman had his Christmas. The hall of the Mansion and the spacious drawing room; negro voices in quaint melody mahog A lighted candles, holly; the steaming bowl; and a roast pig and turkey; the dig- nified ritual of the anclent Church—this was the Christmas of the Sunny Southland. A village street with Dbig trees, stone walls and rail fences, their tops just showing above the deep snow; the sleigh bells chime and merry volces, the old house such as we see no more, with blue smoke curl- ing from the chimney, and heaping table, fragrant turkey and the fixin's, pumpkin pies, nuts and raisins; a square white Church with central spire, a monster stove, shy boys and girlg, the parson’s solemn voice ~50 was our childhood Christ- mas, Then the tree, the wonderful tree loaded down with dainties and gifts, and the stockings “hung by the chimney with care.” “And in and thru all of these the marvelous spirit of good will and gencrosity, and one time In all the year when the whole Christian world feels it is akin in the great, divine joy of brotherhood, the family of God's children. All these trails lead back to the manger cradle of Bethle- hem. It was an event for wise men and kings to mark, an event that could produce and perpetuate this wonderful Spirit, And slowly this Spirit gains. Moving out from Christmas day and the home, it is pene. trating the rest of the year and capturing other realms of life, Blessed is he who yields him- self to this spirit at Christmas. Thrice blessed is he who finds a place for this spirit in every day and all through his living!
