~ ANGIENT INDIANS ROAMEDCALIORNIA Excavations Uncover ‘Bones ol Earliest Tribes Yet Found Santa Barbara, Cal, Oect, 25,~In- dians resembling the Cro-Magnon man inhabited the shores of the Pacific at an age earlier by many centuries than ever yet established hy archacologists, waccording to elaims made here after discovery of important specimens in excavating Burton Mound, early home of the Bapta Barbara Indians, The explorations are being made by J, P. Harrington of the Smithsenian insti- tution of Washington. Two skeletons unearthed by Mr, Harrington yesterday are asserted to be remains of aw age that dates be- yond that of any other specimens un- covered during the excavations, which have covered a period of six months Lying on the surface of the hard pan beneath forty-four inches of an aeollan deposit of loam, which shows no signs of having heen dug into by the Indians during the period of the centuries-old graves hitherto excavat- ed, gvas found w skull, with brow abnormally retreating and very thick. The brow ridges are prominent, the face is very long and the jaw mas- sive, The profile 1s almost gorilla- like, The skeleton accompanying the skull was fragile and had to be [res moved with great care. Alongside the skeleton was another of the same type, the skull of which had crumbled, but was very thick.
