Fuller company, con- tractors for New York's new court. house, a granite quarry at Crotch Is- land, Me., which he did not own, and which previously had been sold for taxes to Dr. B, M. Noyes, of Stoning- ton, Me, was made by counsel and witnesses for the Fuller company at a hearing held today by Commissioner of Accounts Hirshfield, into charges by Ryan that the Fuller company had used low grade granite on the court- house work. J. F. Manning, of Stonington, Me, general manager of the quarries de- partment of the Fuller company, pro- duced a deed of sale of the quarry in question for unpaid taxes amounting to $415. This deed was dated Febru- ary 12, 1921 and certified due by the registrar, February 24, 1922, The contract to the Fuller company, he pointed out, was let on June 23, 1922, Manning said he had been a granite expert for 40 years and had taken out the granite for such structures as the Lincoln memorial at Washington, the post office at Denver, Col, and the courthouse and city hall at Cleveland. Manning testified that he had ex- amined the Crotch Island quarry and the Rogers quarry from ‘which the granite was taken. “All quarries in that neighborhood are the same as regards their product,” he said. “The stone cooled at the same time and was of the same age. “In my judgment there were no facilities at the Ryan quarry to enable us to flll our contract in the time specified, which was 14 months. The Ryan quarry had been carried below sea level and in places was fllled with water, To get this out and get off the top sheets of granite before we could get at the perfect material, would take eight months more,” —_— MISS BOOTH BETTER.
