Ogden Armour, who returned from Lurope on the same ship with the Lloyd Georges. ‘The United States, and France will stand together #gainst a wave of autocracy that seems to be sweeping over the world, Mr. Lloyd George declared in his onlv address here yesterday. Democracy he said, is in peril. Democratic institutions alone can produce and train men that are able to appeal to natlons, to rise to those heights of sacrifice which are the last citadels of freedom in all lands, he said, “Now, when democracy Is in danger, when T can see the throne of democracy tumbling in one land after another, here you have a land of democracy,” he said. “Britain is a lund of democracy and France, T be- lieve, will stand by democracy; and whatever happens, these threc great lands will stand against this wave of autocracy which seems to be sweep- ing over the world.” Cause of German Dcfeat The defeat of Germany, he said. was not attributable to lack of valor or skHl in her troops but in the lack of visions, courage and leadership ‘of the rulers. Lloyd George cordially greetea Count Albert Apponyi, veteran Hun- garian ctatesman, with whom he dif- fered at the peace treaty discussions at Versailles. They met at the speak- ers’ table at the luncheon tendered to the British statesman to welcome him to Chicago. A private dinner planned by Brig. General Charles G. Dawes, former federal director of the budget, for the ex-premier, was held last night with a vacant chair marking the place of the absent honor guest, who was un- able to attend owing to his indisposi- tion, WILLIAMS 0. PLAN 0 CUT DANGER $POT | Approves Sixth Ward Alderinan's Suggestion to Lliminate Traffic Hazard in North End City Enginecer Joseph D. Williams has gone over a plan advanced by Al- derman Frank L. Conlon of the sixth ward by which it is hoped to mini- mize a menace to traffic at the corner of Main and North streets, where the proximity of trolley tracks to the sidewalk causes a dangerous con- dition. The engineer believes the al- derman’s plan will greatly tremedy the situation, At McCabe's corner the tracks take a curve that brings the rails to within five feet of the curh. It is not possible for a vehicle to pass between the tracks and the curb at this point without a smashup. Al- derman Conlon has suggested that a portion of the curb be put back a dis- tance of several feet and the fence be brought up against the corner build- ing. The cost will be slight and tRere will be little damage that may be claimed by property owners. Mayor A. M. Paonessa has also in- terested himself in Alderman Conlon's plan and will request the city engincer to prepare an estimate of the cost. In over 50 per cent of the families physical disabilities required either a doctor or a nurse.
