period 1o the toxin-antitexin te pre- - ‘.‘, NsuAlly ineffective as the infant tis- 0 sues do not respond well during this BAR 70 DIPHTHERIA Dr, Pullen Explains Process in His Weekly Health Talk By RICHARD €, PULLEN Supt, of Heaith Dept. There are in general two methods of preventing diphtheria, The first method is to aveld contaet with per. sons who have diphtheria or who have diphtheria germs in their throats, The second method is by having your doctor give toxin-anti toxin, The first method is enforeed as well as ean be by quarantining the persons Infected, This, however, can- not be a totally satisfactory method In the first place all cases are not re ported to the authorities, One rea for this Is that sometimes no doc s called and then, of course health department has no knowles of the case. Tn the second plu there are & great many people whom we have previously discussed, namely diphtheria carriers, who while they are perfectly well In appearance have the diphtheria germs In their throats, ‘These germs can only be found by taking cultures from the nose and throat, It is plain to bhe seen that in order to determine how many carriers there are and who they are would make it necessary to fake nose and throat cultures from every person in the city of New Britain, There are without doubt some diphtheria cur- riers In this city who are not quar- antined, This has been found by tak ing cultures from children who wished to enter institutions where they wonld be in contaet with a number of othor children. Before they were admittod they required a permit from howil of health and before this permit w given nose and throat cultures «taken. Where the diphtheria germ was found the persons were not allow- ed to enter the institutions but were quarantined at home. This undonbt edly helps to prevent the spread of diphtherfa. But when we realize thet there must be carrlers whom we do not know we become certain that some additional method of prevention must be used. This brings us to the consideration of toxin-antitoxin, Now, as has pre viously been said, certain pers e immune to dfphtheria. It is possilil for the doctor to determine who is immune by the use of what is called the Schick test. When this test shows that a person is not immune, toxin- antitoxin can be given to make that person immune. Perhaps the planation of it ail is given hricfly accurately in the following excerpt from the report issued by the Con- nectlcut state department of health: “The deaths from diphtheria in Connecticut, as elsewhere, can I greatly diminished, as can the num- ber of cases, by the use of diphtheria toxin-antitoxin. Conneeticut js one of the states where ci g are anx fous to save their childven from com municable diseases, “No child or adult need suffer from diphtheria. today. “Pr. Park of the New York City Department of Health concludes from his study that immunization by toxin- antitoxin is not necessary hefore the age of. six months. His conclusion in the Journal of Am an Medical a ,Sociation is as follow fhe to antitoxin thjections arc inadvisahle before the age of six months, Dur- ing this time most of the infants r tain the antitoxin received from th mothers. Up to the age of three months immunizing injections are duee antitoxin, Under usual conditions it Is probably safe to walt until the infant is nine months or a year old NORE POLISH IN CHICAGO THAN THERE ARE IN WARSAW srants travgling alene to join their relatives here that Miss Masurkiewics believes that the Felish government may consider giving fnancial suppel 1o the werk, hey While here she make will and then te give the injections at the |Sophic Masurkiowics Says Place 0 | headquarters at the American offices oceasion.
