§ ~ Health Department Supt. Explains OR. PULLENTELLS OF DIPHTHERIA WENAGE . Symptoms and Results By RICHARD W, PL N, M, D, (Bupt. of Health Dept.) The disease diphtheria is so well known and so mueh feared by everys one that It may seem unnecessary to take It up In these columns, Per- haps, however, a few facts may be helpful, Diphtheria is eaused by a germ called the diphtheria baeillus, This germ gets into the throat and is th ent whieh causes the membrane Lo form, It also gives off which are poisonous to the The disease begins from two to seven days after the patient is exposed and is most common in young children, It begins like most of the “feverish diseases of childhood, that is, with chilliness, fever and aching pains In the back and legs. Often at first the child does not feel very sick and may not have to go to bed, The tempera- ture usually reaches 102 to 104 in the first 24 hours, mon types of the disease, namely, pharyngeal, laryngeal and nasal, Pharyngeal occurs in the back of the throat in the reglon of the ton- siln, It is evidenced first by a slight diffieulty In swallowing, and at this products | system, | ‘There are three com- | {time, patehes of & mfiu mem - lbrane can usually be seen on the ten- | sils. his membrane s & flmiike substance of a divty greylsh ecolor which is firmly attached to the ten. siils, 1t gradually spreads and covers the entire back part of the threat. Swelling and blecking of the alr pas- sages frequently result and death comes from suffocation Laryngeal diphtheria beging in the laryns or veiee box, The first sym. |toms are usually those found in eroup There are slight hoarseness and an irritating cough, Sometimes bits of membrance which have formed in the larynx are coughed up, The mem. brane in the larynx cannot he seen but is even more serious than that whieh oceurs on the tonsil In the larynx there is much less space and Iwhen the swelling hegins it soon clos- o8 up the air passage between the vocal chords. This again makes it | impossible for the patient to breath and death results unless proper care {1s taken Nasal diphtheria is similar to the other types but is not usually so seri. ous. The membrane comes in the nose and often hlocks up the air pas. e, but in these cases the patient | can breath through the mouth, ft must always be remembered that these kinds of cases do not always oceur separately but frequently all types come at once, For this reason all cases in which there Is any mem- | brane are serious, Diphtheria Carrlers This brings up the question pf diph- | theria carriers, Carriers are ‘persons | who appear perfectly well but who | have the diphtheria germs in their throats, They may have had the disease and are recovering from it or 'USED CAR SALE We Have a Good Assortment of Used FORD Cars Which We Will Place on Sale at 287 Elm Street SATURDAY AFTERNOON Sept. 15 Each car will be plainly marked and we will be glad to demonstrate them to prospective buyers Elmer Automobile Co. 22 MAIN ST. Pioneer Ford Dealers 'NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1923, they may have gollen the gertas from contact with a case. They do not get the disease themselves either because they have had U wecently or have been protecied by antitosin. Certaln cases seem (0 have & natural mmun- ity These carviers are dangerous te other persons, Carriers, though they may seem to he perfeetly well, ecan spread the disease to others. This is @ faet whieh it seems hard for any pople to helieve, They think that since the person is perfeetly well he ecannot spread the disease, This Is not true. This feeling makes it very hard to eontrol diphtheria, Carriers are found by taking euitures of their throats and noses, 1f the diphtheria germs are found in these eultures, the person from whom the eulture is taken is a carrier The state law requires that suech persons be centrolled very muel the same as an actual case of diphtherla They have to he kept in the house, jand the house is placarded with a “Carrvier’” sign until laboratory exams inations prove that the patient ean no longer spread the disease, In or- der to free the throat from the diph- theria germs, the patient must have a doctor's advice and treatment It is particularly important at this time to consider the question of diph- theria carriers, The schools have Just opened and it Is easy to see that A& number of carriers running wild can spread diphtheria very mpldly among the sehool children, The board of health knows of a certain number of carriers and these are belng isolated. It is, however, very hard to do this properly because many parents try to evade the orders of the | board of health, | Seven Carriers Detected This I8 not fair to other children, Of course, it Is hard for ‘anyone lo believe that a child who is apparent- Iy not sick In any way can be a men- ace to the health of others. RBut nevertheless it is a fact, In one secc- tion of the city seven carriers were found, all in one small district. Very shortly after this four diphtheria cases developed. Now, there is no way of getting actual proof, but it is reasonable to suppose that these car- riers had spread the disease before they were isolated and kept away from other children. Think this over, and you will decide that it is the duty of parents to obey the orders of the board of health in regard to carriers. If people will not obey of their own free will, it is very hard to forcc them. There are only three sani- tary inspectors in the department of health and they cannot be every- where at once. In the nékt article of this series, diphtheria will be further discussed. Suffice it to say now, that if there is any reason to suspect that one of your children has diphtheria, call a doctor at once. He will give treat- ment that will go a very long way to- ward preventing death from the disease. 10,662 ENROLL IN SCHOOLS ain of 503 Over Last Year Reported by Principals—1,267 in Attendance at Nathan Hale School.
