Studio, 777 Hart Street THEM DAYS IS GONE FOREVER NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1023, DOLLAR RESPECTED BUT NOT YANKEES Jay Birnbaum Tells o l)hsem: tions on Trip to Europe Jay Birnbaum, whe econduets n. business on Main street, has returned | after about three months absence | during which he toured Eurepe, making a study of social and econom- | le eonditions and attending the 13th World Confergree of the Zionist as- soclation. He reports that throughout Kurope he found great respect for the American dollar, but little re. speet for the American people, With the exception of Holland, found European currency to be of comparatively little value and the Ameriean dollar much in demand, but in that country position to seek exchange, he reports, Mr, Rirnbaum landed at France and after one day stay, left for Belgium He reports that country rapidly re- covering from the effects of the war, Belgium is being bullt up In faet more 8o than is France, After a visit at Amsterdam, Holland, he went to Rerlin, Germany, where he remained five days, FEconomic conditions were found to be deplorable at the German capital, When he offered a million marks, what was at that time $5 in American money, for a glass of milk, and was refused, he made inquiries. He was told that the occupation of the fertile Ruhr valley had made it Impossible for Germany to produce even enough milk to take proper care of the children of the country. Sees Deggars Everywhere, Mr, Birnbaum found beggars at all turns. There was evidence of little food and clothing, and apparent need of outside help, In the business cen- ters the shops were open only a few hours a day and merchandise was the most stable holding that any Berlin resident could boast. Sudden and violent fluctuations in the market made it impossible for people to know from day to day how much they were worth. After a short stop at Potsdam where the tle of the former kaiser was visited, Birnbaum went to Poland, He found plenty of food, little cloth- ing, and very poor governmental con- ditions, For every 16 persons in the country, he was told, there is one paid public official. The costs of government are too great for the country to stand. Stabilized govern- ment he feels is the one factor that can bring Poland back to normalcy. The return trip brought him to Vienna, Prague and Carlsbad, where ke attended the 13th World Zionist Congress, the most successful ever held. At Munich he found conditions better than in Berlin. Next came visits to Switzerland and Versallles, where he visited the building in which: the treaty was signed. A short visit in Paris ended the Euro- pean trip and Mr. Birnbaum sailed for the United States August 20, reaching New York September 5. EHO\"ER FOR MISS LOOMIS. Miss Jennie IKallgren and Miss Signe Kalberg entertained about 60 guests at a miscellaneous shower last evening at the home of Miss Kalgren on Dwight street in honor of Miss Fisle Loomis. Miss Loomis received many beautiful and useful gifts of silver, cut glass and electrical appli- ances. The house was decorated in yellow and pink. Vocal selections were rendered by Miss Gertrude Klein, accompanied by Miss Helen Egan on the piano. A buffet lunch was served to guests who weré pres- ent from South Manchester, Southing- ton and this city. THEATERS \\'pN T CLOSE.
