Treasurer Upham Says Coal Strike May Make of Mar In- *cumbent's Opportunity New York, Sept. 4.—The coal strike may make or mar President Coolidge's chances for nomination at the 1924 republican convention in the opinion of Fred W. Upham, treasurer of the national republican committee who arrived yesterday from a trip abroad. Mr. Upham predicted that Presi dent Coolidge would be - nominated next year to succed himself “if he has a chance meantime to demon- strate his ability and if he chooses to be a candidate.” “The president” he added ‘“has many hurdles to negotiate between now and next June and he has not demonstrated what he can or will do. If President Coolidge secks the nomin- ation he will be in a position of a pole horse because he will go into the con- vention as the reigning head of his party.” Other “formidable” candidates, Mr. Upham thought, would be Senator Robert M. LaFollette of Wisconsin, Senator Hiram Johnson of California | and former Governor Frank O. low. den of lilinois. Albert Lasker, for- mer chairman of the U. 8. Shipping Board has consented to manage Sepa- tor Johnson's campaign, Mr. Upham added Mr. Upham predicted the 1924 con- vention will be in Chicago. Miss Julia Clem of 59 Laurel street was operated upon this morning at the New Britain General hospital.
