MISS STIRLING GOEY ROUND GOURSEIN TS Former Woman Champion Ex- hibits Skill at Shuttle Meadow Miss Alexa Stirling, of Atlanta, Ga., and New York city, was the guest of R. L. Redfisld, of Farmington and New York yesterday and Mr. Redfield took advantage of the occasion by bringing his party to play golf in the afternoon at the Shuttle Meadow club, Miss Stirling, former woman national title holder, playing in a foursoms, made a 79 for the 18 holes. She had little luck with her putting, missing several short ones and getting no breaks in luck to drop the longer ones, otherwise the story might have been chronicled evén a lower gcore. Her long game and iron play was accus rate in both distance and direction and the shots were made with a seem- ing lack of effort that is the mark of | Time | and again the little woman was driv- | practically all leading goilfers. ing with the men for 200 yards or better and she was almost invariably straighter to the pin than were her male opponents. In the rare occa- sions that #ouble threatened or was present she made recoveries that, after all, are the true tests of the golfer. The 79 is probably a course record for women on the local links, although it was made by a woman who had never played over the round before On the first and second holes, start- ing out. Miss Stirling took a 5 apiece, each a stroké over par. On the Jong third she was on in two wooden shots and comparatively short iron and down for a par five. The fourth was also made in 5, on in two with three which is par for that hole. She wae on in two. On the short eixth she was over, into the trap at the back &he was well out but took a 4. On the “‘dog-leg sevénth’ she was on in 3 and down in par 5. The eighth, par 5, lick put her on the green 516 yards from the tee. She took two putts again for a par 5. The ninth she ne- gotiated in 4, being in the trap on the drive, out in 2 and two putts. Total, lower nine, 42 strokes on a par 87.
