ARATTACKS FRON GREAT ALTITUDES England Laying Keels of Huge Rirships to Carry Smaller Planes London, July 17.—Keels are now being laid in Great Britain for huge rigid airships which will hover above the clouds with a number of small fighting machines on board ready to launch at a foe, says an aeronautical expert in the London Dally Chronicle, The task of these new machines in war, he says, will be to carry aloft to immense heights and to transport, if necessary, thousands of miles, squad- rons of swift, deadly, steel-built “at- tack planes.” These will be launched from high above the clouds, and will rush at 200 miles an hour and more earthward to harry other aircraft and rald the commerce of the seas. Will Have Power ““The airships will have the power, lacking in a small = machine,” the writer says, “of long distance flights at a great altitude, while, on the other Jiand, the small planes they carry will be able to outfly and out:fight any machine laden for a long journey. “In the case of specially-organized attacks by these formidable air-borne fighters on 'planes carried at sea by mother -ships, the tactics of the craft cent darting down from airships will be to dive pell-mell on their surfac- launched opponents, and strike them deadly blows before they can gain the \antage point of altitude. “Height in alr-warfare is the key to vietory, and these airship-carrier fighters will have the advantage of leing in a position to choose their ¢wn moment for a swoop upon enemy craft climbing from the earth.” “Aerial Harbors" The Chronicle's contributor says that France, Ttaly and the United Htates all shoy a growing recognition of the importance of mobile “aerial harbors” for swarms of fighting planes. The United States already has laid the keel of an airship which will launch single-seater fighters and pick them up again while the mother craft iz traveling at full speed. The first American “flying aerodrome,” he adds, will be ready to take the air this summer. Tt will carry as a nor- mal load 12 fighters of the latest type. Aircraft Transport Great Britain has completed the first seagoing vessel in the world de- clgned specially for the transport of aireraft. She has a displacement of 10,950 tons and carries seven 6-inch guns, four 4.inch and a number of smaller guns. Besides torpedo arma- ment, the new vessel is fitted with two hangars, enabling her to'carry 20 airplanes, which will be raised to the taking off decks by means of electric elevators, \ Another advance in aerial efficiency is the construction, for the British air ministry, of huge seaplanes with a speed of 126 miles an hour, One of the latest types has a wing span of 112 feet and carries nearly two tons of gasoline. It is fitted with twin Condor engines of 1,300 horse- power each, driving twin propellers. WORKING OVER REPLY British Cabinet Members Devoting Their Week-end to Devising Proper ‘Wording of Message. By The Assoclated Press. London, July 17.—Members of the British cabinet will give undivided thought over the week-end to Great Britain's reply to the German memo- randum regarding reparations. Premier Baldwin is spending Satur- day and Sunday at Chequers Court and Forelgn Secretary Curzon is going into seclusion at hls suburban retreat. It is now hoped to have the complete draft finished by the latter part of the coming week. Premier Baldwin is expected either on Monday or Tuesday to reply in the affirmative to J. Ramsay MacDonald's query in the house of commons this week as to whether a copy of the re- ply would be communicated to the Unlted States government. The best manner in which to phrase Great Britain's acceptance of the plan for an international body of experts to appraise Germany's financial strength as advanced originally by the Ameri- can gsecretary of state is giving the cabinet members a goocd deal of thought. The cabinet also is canvassing the question as to how far it is expedient in the draft reply to touch upon Ger- many's passive resistance.
