JULY 4TH MATCHES ATSHUTTLE MEADOW Good Games But No Spectacular ; Cards Turned in 0] " The annual Fourth of July handi- cap golf tournament at the Shuttle Meadow cluh links yesterday at- tracted a good number of entrants but furnished no spectacular cards at the end of a day's play, The quali- fying round in the morning chose the sixteen low players who then met in pairs for the first round of the elimination contest. E. M. Hay- den was the lowest net player in the morning round and there were three players, H. H. Pease, R. T. Frishie and D. L. Vibberts tied for second place, Hayden's net bhelng 70, the others being 71, It so happened that a net of 79 or below was necessary to qualify. Peculiarly enough the man who won the low net in the morning was eliminated in the first round by D. R. Mannfng, who had the same handicap and finished with a net seven strokes higher than that of Hayden's. M, July b.— Three trainmen,were killed, two per- sons probably fatally injured, and a score of others less seriously hurt early yesterday when Sante Fe pas- senger train No. 9, known as the Nuavajo, plunged over a 30-foot em- tankment on a sharp curve near Domingo, N. M, 30 miles north of here. The news butcher of the train is missing. Wrecking crews, doctors and nurses were sent to the scene from here. The train comprised six Pullmans, five haggage cars and three coaches. Eleven cars and both locomotives were reported in the ditch. The cause of the wreck has not been de- termined, The train was bound from Chicago fo Los Angeles. DUCKING PROV New York Girl Dies of Heart Failure When Thrown Into Water, Greanwich, Conn, July 5.—DMrs. lizabeth Held of New York died yes- terday afternoon from heart failure brought about by the shock of being thrown into the water at Byram shore. She was thrown from a row- boat when her daughter Anna, aged 23, stepped into the boat and upset it Gus Gunnason, in charge of the row- hoat, rescued Mrs. Held, hut she was dead when brought to shore. A brief in behalf of the national conference on valuation of American rallroads recently convened in Chi- cago has been mission and a spokesman {is expected to appear during the hearing. The argument throughout will bear directly on the valuation of several railroads prineipally the Bangor and Aroostook, Chicago and Eastern Ill- inols and Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville, 1In nearly gll cases the roads /concerned are 'tacking the tentative valuation annbunced by the commission for their property as too small.
