HOUSING SPAGEAT PREMIUN IN BERLIN few Families in German Capital Maintain Entire Aparment ————— Berlin, March 23,—Housing condi- tions are so difticult in Berlin that comparatively few families are able to retain an entire house, or even an entire apartment for themselves, Every section of the city has ity housing ‘committee, which makes constant Inspections and checks up the space in all bulldings. Consequently persons having houses larger than the size of their family justifies under the housing regulations are always seeking lodg- ers, In case the householder does not find his own lodgers, persons will be sent by the housing committees. Under the present financlal strin- gency 'in Germany tenants who will pay well, especially if they will pay in foreign currency, are not unwel- come in many palatial homes, But the ability of foreigners to ac- quire accommodations of a superior class has caused much criticism among Germans, and members of the housing committees are constantly under fire. While some persons ap- parently rent entire apartments, ac- cording to an official of one housing committee, they have in fact permis- sion to rent only one or more rooms. But by paying the holders of leases well it has been possible to induce them to go for fixed periods to water- ing-places where living costs are low, thus leaving the entire house or apartment at the disposal of the sub- | lessee for a limited time. .. .Large houses are being divided up in every possible way to meet with the housing regulations and guar- antee privacy to the tenants.” Apart- ments in better buildings in Berlin are so Yarge that it is seldom possible for a family to retain a whole apart- ment, Consequently there are two families cooking in many kitchens, and the comic papers are full of Jokes about the complications aris- ing from the housing regulations, ' GLIFF DWELLERS PROBABLY DWARFS Scientists Will Be Asked to Give Attention to Skeleton Discovered Prescott, Ariz, March 23.—Scien- tists who will visit Prescott next sum- juer to attempt to fathom the mys- tery of the ancient cliff dwellings on the Verde river will be asked to give their attention to a skeleton found recently by Morris and Howell Payne, . ranchers living a few miles north of this city. Set of Teeth. Although the skeleton ¢ apparently | | day was on the Halifax river, slowly 1Y WHE KE 'RYZON | BAKING POWDER you use /ess no larger than that of a child of four or five years the skull contains a fully developed set of mature teeth, The Payne brothers unearthed the skeleton while excavating for a road in Granite Dells, a vast granite formation near Prescott. ‘Digging carefully they were able to extricate practically all the bones without breaking them, The skeleton has excited lively in. terest on account of the size and the maturity of the teeth and skull bones which one physiclan sgid showed none of the evidences of immaturity of an infant's cranium, Hand' Prinls Seen. Prints of the hands of the bullders of the well preserved prehistoric dwelling known as Montezuma's cas- tle are stlll seen in the mud-like mor- tar holding the stones together, and these prints indicate that the dwellers were persons with very small hands. The tiny doorways and low ceilings seem to bear out the theory that the people living there were of small stat- ure, but the dwarf-like skeleton is so much smaller than that of the man of today that it has created another of those archeological problems which it is the purpose of the National Geo- graphic soclety to solve if possible in a series of expeditions next summer, PIONEER RUNS LATE.
