And much of their hope is pinneé on Mellen, He weighs only 1562 pounds and has never before been I a, varsity, boat, but his rise is sure as it was fast. Kane on the other hand is a vet- eran varsity oarsman. He was a star at Harvard both upon the water and on the gridiron and his place in Ox- Jford's crew seemed wssured when he matriculated last fall. Put with Mellen, two years younger than Kane, much lighter and less ex- perienced it was different. He was at Oxford last year fresh from Mddlesex sehood, Mass. - At Middlesex his oar was eighth.
