Senate Washington, Feb, 9—President Har- ding will be a candidate for re-elec- tion in 1924 and will be nominated unanimously by the vepublican party, Benator Watson of Indiana, prominent in the republican leadership, prediot- ed in the senate yesterday during a debate with democrats over political questions, The Indiana senator also promised his support for Senator Lodge of Massachusetts, the republican leader in the senate, for that position in the next congréss, saying that "It the senator from Massachusetts wants to be leader in the next congress, I know of no reason why he shouldn't be and Tam for him," He added that the re- publican party would present a Yinited front in 1924 and stand on the ad- ministration's record in congress and in the executive departmenta, Bignificance was attuched to Sena- tor Watson's statements because of mention which has been made of him As a possible presidential candidate next year and because of his promi- nence in the administration leader- ship and his close personal and ppli- tical connection with President Har- ding. Frequently he is in consultation with the chief executive and in fact made his statements on‘the floor of the senate not long after returning from a White House conference, EMPLOYMENT FIGURES Male Help More in Demand at Five Free Agencies in January Than in December, Hartford, Feb. 9.—~Male help was in larger demand at the five free public employment bureaus of the state bureau of labor in January than in December, according to the figures for the month given out today. The total number of applications for employ- ment was 2,761 males and 1,663 fe- males, or 4,324 in all; the applica- tions for help 2,354 males and 1,665 females, or 3,909 in all, and situa- tions were secured for 2,221 males and 1,361 females, or 3,682. Of male applicants for employment 80.56 per cent were found places as against 75.7 per cent in December. The percent- age for femalés showed a slight fall- ing off, * The city figures for applications for employment were: Hartford, 747; New Haven, 1,381; Bridgeport, 943; Water- bury, 738; Norwich, 515. Applica- tions for help were: Hartford, 741; New Haven, 1,302; Bridgeport, 815; Waterbury, 578; Nor- weh, 473, Situations secured were: -! New York, Feb. 9.—Seeking pa- rental blessings for her marriage to Reginald C Vanderbilt, on February 17, Miss Gloria Morgan has cabled her father, Harry Hays Morgan, American consul general at Brussels, that she and Mr. Vanderbilt are en- gaged. NEAR EAST MEETING Ministers and Representative Citizens to Discuss Plans for $6,000 Drive | Monday Afternoon. In order to start the ball rolling in the Near East Relief drive for $6,000 in New Britain, a meeting of all the ministers of the city will be held at the South Congregational church Monday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. Plans will be discussed and a gen- eral committee selected. 1n addition to the ministers a number of regre- sentative citizens have been invited to be present and give the benefit of thelr advice '‘and judgment. The moving picture, “Seeing Is Be- lieving,” depicting conditions in the Near East and what is being done to relieve them, will be shown.
