OBJECT T0 SCHOOL INTHE SOUTHEAST mail, Postmaster Leuder | Residents Believe It Would Fail| to Serve District Opposition to the school commit- tee's program of school building ex- tension as affecting the southeastern| section of the city, is being heard and | may eventually take the form of a| petition to the board to change its present plans for reasons of economy and to afford better school accom- m:odations. Under the present program ,a new school to relieve congestion is con- templated after an extension of Day street to Austin strect is aken care| of. This will place a school building close to the New Britain-Newington town line and, according to those who oppose the program, will involve Leavy preliminary expenditure while it will net properly care for that sec- tion of the city. Opponents of the plan point out| that there is a wide expanse of terri- tory bounded on the northeast by the East street school ,on the north- west by the Elm street school, on the west by the Rockwell school, on the southwest by the Northend school, and on the southeast by the Smith school, and they reason that a school placed somewhere in the center of this territory would relieve conges- tion in all the schools mentioned. On that account they oppose a new build- ing hat would form a part of the ex- treme east boundary. Street Work Would Cost 311,316, Figures have been secured as to the ! cost of improvements connected with | the proposed extension of Day street from its present angle point to Aus tin street, to make possible the con struction of the proposed new build ing. The cost, it has been estimated, would run to $11,316 before the work | of grading the streets is considered, | and all of this must be expended be- fore anything is done in the way of beginning the actual construction of the school building. The street extension will be 665 lineal feet. Sewers for that distance at the rate of $7 a foot, will cost $4,655; curbs on one side of the street, at 60 cents a foot, would cost $399; sidewalks on one side cost, at the rate of $1.20 a foot, $931; 1,330 feet of gutters, at 80 cents a foot, will cost $1,064; 2,217 square yards of| macadam, at $1.25 a square yard, will| cost § 1; and 665 feet of water- main at $2.25 a foot, will cosy 71,496, | making a total of $11,316. For such grading as may be necessary 75 cents per cubic yard will be charged the city. | In view of the large expense in- volved and the possibility that the de- | sired benefits may not be attained, the objections of the east enders are being heard.
