Mrs. Van Wye was elected to the house of representatives by 76,609 votes, Born and educated in Brooklyn, Mrs. Van Wye came here about 10 years ago and engaged in school work. She was a member of the na- tional council of defense during the war, being in direct charge of the so- cial work of that organization, and also served as chairman of the Pa- triotic league. She is now connected with the Y. W. C. A. in an officlal capacity and is also a member of sev- eral clubs of Cincinnatl. It is Mrs. Van Wye's first venture in politics. During her campaign she spoke on legislation for women. BShe also stressed the importance of the women exercising their newly acquir- ed rights. The woman representative says that her main hobbie is traveling, but that she is also fond of gardening and out- door life. Interest in the home is the most important, she sys. .Mra. The suburban communities | say this is too much honor. They| prefer to go on living a modest sub- urban life, to a share in splendors of | the capital, Besides, they reckon the cost will be greater than the honor. Paris replies that the suburbs will enjoy the improvements that will be made on the site of the fortifications and that therefore they should come in and share the expenses. | France now has 2,714 locomotives, | 7,764 passenger cars, and freight cars.
