Berlin, Dec. 18 (By the Assoclated Press)—In the midst of their Christ- mas shopping consumers were jubil- ant today at the unprecedented drop in the dollar represented by the mark exchange falling from 8,300 to 5,600 to the dollar in the course of five days. This rise in the mark has already pro- duced a drop from 10 to 25 per cent in wholesale market prices. The re- taflers are reluctant to make reduc- tions because they are stocked up with goods bought when the mark was much lower. The announcement of the New York’s closing rate of exchange Satur- day turned Sunday into a busy day at home for all the bourse traders, who were computing overnight the amount of their gains. NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, MONPAY, DECEMBER 18, 1922. TELLS HOW 0 MAKE CITY PROSPEROUS Rev. Jobn L. Davis' Talk to Men's Bible Class Integrity, righteousncss, ness and inspiration are the four fundamental principles which will make New Britain or any other place a prosperous city, Rev John L. Davis told the members of the Everyman's Bible class at the session held yester- day morning at 9:30 o'clock at Trin-| ity Methodist chuhch, Because of the | inclemency of the weather there were but 3656 men In attendance, the Red army having 140, the Blue 158, the White 67, Tollowing the sesslon of the class the members of the executive com- mittee met and in a body went to the Murray sudio on Main street where their photographs were taken. Visi- tors were present yesterday from Hopedale, Mass., and from Durham, this state. It was also announced that Mayor Wade of Bristol with sev- eral of the officials in that town will attend the session of the class on Sunday next. “Things That Make falthful- New Britain Prosperous” was the title of the ad-|, dress given by Rev. Mr. Davis, al- though It might easily have been called “Things That Make Any City Prosperous.” Rev. Mr, Davis asserted in his talk that most people belleve that gold, siiver and other raw materials; labor, capital, intelligence are the things and points upon which a community depends for prosperity. “Africa s just full of mines and in fact it has unlimited resources,” the speaker asserted, “but of. what uge are they? Raw materials alone do not make a nation prosperous.” The minister in continuing his talk sald, “Labor, by many, {s considered an asset to prosperity. There plenty of available labor in Rdssia at the present time, but the country is|§ in such a condition that the men cannot be put to work. The Russian |§ labor has lost its faith in God and is practically worthless, Capital is essentlal but it does not is often | mean everything. Money times put into gambling places, houses of {1l fame and certainly places such as these do not make a community prosperous, Intelligence is also a great asset but it is not everything. It |8 is a whole lot, however, and especially in the city of New Britain where there are so many employes in the factory who do not fully understand our lan- guage.” The speaker then asserted that he believes the owners of the factories in New Britain should take out the children it employs, place them in a school and pay their expenses until they have gained a good knowledge of the American language and Amer- ican customs. He said that the men may not wamt to do it but he thinks they will have to come to it soon as the world no longer wants ignorant people. Modern industry began when one man found out that he was able to trust another, the speaker said, and it long as this condition exists. - The business men of the world should increase their grasp on the principles of the Bible and work with the spirit to help and serve and not always think of the profit they are going to make, Mr. Davis said. This splendid cooperation existed during the perlod of the war and there is no reason wWhy it cannot be continued now, he added. He also sald that people who be- come intelligent without a knowledge of religion are becoming dangerous. In closing his remarks the minister said that the old fashioned home is becoming a thing of the past and to many the talks of ministers, priests and rabbis are of Ilittle value. The old fashioned home with all its splen- did spirit of cooperation and family unity will not return_ unless the ser- mons of the church are heeded and given a considerable amount of con- sideration, he asserted. MAY HARNESS WINDS Plans Evolved in England To Hitch Breezes To Machinery That Will Produce Electricity. d London, Dec. 18.—A plan to har- ness the winds and make them pro- duce electricity for rural districts has been presented to the ministry of ag- riculture. The scheme involves the erection on hilltops of low buildings in the sides of which will project These wings will be spun by the wind horizontally, just above the ground. Proponents of the plan assert that unlimited amounts of electricity can be obtained in this way at a minimum of cost. Government officials are test- ing the scheme and should it prove feasible it is planned to build several of the generating stations in out-of- the-way districts.
