BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1922, & that Darwin's theory of evolution is wrong comes from the Rev, Dr, J, Enander, a Bwedish country minis- ter, more famous a8 a botanist, who has just returned to his congregation and an orchard of at least a thous- and varleties of willows and willow hybrids, after a botanical tour through the United States and Can- ada, "“The cross-breeding of plants Is as fascinating to a botanist as the cross- breeding of races to a blologist,” says Dr. Enander. ‘''Cross-breeds usually occur when the willows go northward, or to higher altitudes in mountainous countries. The female willow is a more hardy and aggressive ploneer than the male, but continues being fertilized by the male as long as he s able to follow. When the male plants finds the migration too hard and gives up, the female willow ace cepts fertilization from some male of a kindred specles, and thus cross- breeds, arlse,”” Dr, Enander added that there werp more than 70 vari- etles of sallows, or willows, and many thousands of cross-breeds, The United States customs officers prevented the Swedlsh botanist from taking In live botanical specimens which he wanted 'to show to Ameri- can sclentists, THls was In accord- ance with Ahe law designed to pre- vent spreading of plant diseases, Dr, “SWEDISH BOTANIST ATTACKS DARWIN Claim Is Made That Theory of Evolution Is All Wrong Btockholm, Dec,’8.—~A declaration BUY YOUR GIFTS § ‘. i - i AT OUR FURNISHING SALE —_— We have closed our Furnishing Dept. and have moved it to this city and must move it. This sar, a variable star of the so- called cluster type, has long been known to astronomers, but its velocity was never measured until recently, It is far too faint to be seen with the naked eye, being of the tenth magnitude. It is in the constellation Cepheus, and is 3,800 light years dis- tant from the earth, which means that light from it which astronomers now see through 'their telescopes started on its journey to the earth in the time of the shepherd kings of Egypt, nearly 1900 years before Christ. That distance is only a small fraction of the distance from the earth to some of the more distant \ | Star-clusters, but the outstanding fact || about RZ Cephei is that its velocity as it flies through space is the great- est yet known for a star. Speed Is Measured. The speed of the star was measured at the Harvard observatory by a com- p]lcuted process of observations and ¢ |computations, including among other * | things the comparison of photographs recently taken at Harvard with others taken 31 years ago, when the observa- tory was just beginning its task of prcser\'lng a photographic history of the entire sky. “sky patrol” has been kept without interruption at Cambridge, supple- : |mented by photographs taken at the station at- Arequipa, Peru, and the hhstory of the stars down to the elev- enth megnitude has, been written by the stars themselves on over a quar- ter of a million photographic plates weighlnc in all one hundred and for- ty tons. Most of the discoveries made by Harvard astronomers, it is said at Cambridge, are not made by looking : [through a telescope at night, as is popularly supposed, but by doing what was done in the case of this « | discovery of the speed of RZ Cephei, by studying and measuring by day, in the' laboratory, photographs taken at night, and by computing the sig- nificance of the chafiges in the bril- Since that time a !
