Both were established by the Canadian explorer, Captain Bernier, during the latest tour of his schooner the Arctic. An inspector and six men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are at Craig Harbor, where they have established a post, while four repre- sentatives of the famous police corps represeflt law and' order at Pondldl— lét. Sergeant Joy of,the “Mounties: has beefj ‘in the’ #etrfot a year inves- tigating; an Eskimo murder. New Steps Planned The Bernier expedition was sent for the purpose of taking the first steps in" an extensive program calculated to maintain efficiently’ Canada’s sov- ereignty in’the vast northern region, known to be rich in mineral deposits. The vessel carried materials for the conatruction of houses and provisions for the maintenance of posts. According to a statement issued by the Canadlan ‘department of the in- terior, it is the intention of the gov- ernment to establish additional posts year by year, and to continue scienti-] flc and exploratory work. A patrol ship will visit the new northern posts annually, taking in supplies and mail to the men left there. A representa- tive of the air board accompanied the expedition and will report on the pos- sibilities of aviatign in the north, with partcular reference to patrols, and ex- ploratory and survey work. SHIP BUILDING IN ENGLAND DECLINES Merchant Tonnage Yalls Off 302,000 Tons in Three Months According to Lloyd's London, Nov. 10.—Lloyd’s Register of shipbuilding returns for the quar- ter ended in September, 1922, show that merchant tonnage under con- struction in the United Kingdom on September 30 amounted to 1,617,045 |tona This represents a reduction of about 302,000 tons as compared with the total at the end of the previous quarter. The total, however, includes a con- siderable amount of tonnage (419,- 000 tons) on which work has been suspended for some time. Deducting this amount for purposes of compari- son with figures for normi! times, the merchant tonnage actually under con- | struction in the United Kingdom amounted to 1,198,000 tons. The average tonnage under con- struction during the twelve months immediately preceding the war was 1,890,000 or 692,000 tons more than the present figures. The total merchant tonnage now bullding abroad amounts to 1,085,611 tons, but includes about 256,000 tons ypon which work has been suspended, leaving about 829,000 tons actually under construction. The. tonnage building abroad |is abo 280,000 tons lower than the total building at the end of June last, the figures for the leading countries are: TItaly, 210,114 tons; TFrance, 107,065 tons; Holland 177,024 tons; United States, 147,056 tons; and Ja- pan 96,807 tons. These figures do not take into account the “tonnage building in Germany and at Danzig, for which no returns are avallable, but it is estimated that the tonnage under construction in Germany at the present time {g about 350,000 and at Danzig 40,000 tons tons | ROID, removes the cause. Haverhill, Nov. 9.-~Two 100-gallon stills, in full operation, 40 gallons of moonshine and 20 barrels of mash were seized here by federal prohibi- tion agents on a farm in Willow road, and Peter Gellep, found on the premises, was arrested. The police think :the seizure and arrest important, as they say this source of moonshine was flooding with its contraband Boxford, Tops- field, Middleton and Peabody.
