A | Second Section LODGE CONGRESS NOW 15 IN SESSION Representatives of 96 Organiza- tions With 10,000,000 Members Montreal, Canada, Sept. 1.—Repre- sentatives of 96 socleties with a mem- bership of nearly 10,000,000 persons are gathered heie for the ninth an- nual convention of the national Fra- ternal Congres® of America, which be- gins Monday and continues through August 31, The convention opens with ad- dresses of welcome and a program of business meetings and closes Thurs- day with election of officers. The organization 1is the develop- ment of the last 40 ‘years. A me- chanic named Upchurch, living in a little village in Pennsylvania, is cred- ited with the idea of forming an as- soclation among his brethren for the purpose of affording in the way of benefits paid some protection to the familles of its deceased members. He called a meeting of his fellow workmen and laid what is said to be the foundations for the Ancient Order of United Workmen, considered to be the pioneer of fraternal institutions in this country. The idea was to pro- tect the families of wage earners of moderate i{ncome whose earning ca- pacity as their families were growing up would not permit them to carry insurance of any substantial amount. “Fraternalism as taught by the Na- tional Fraternal congress has point- ed the way for all those coming from foreign lands to become good Ameri- cans,” say congress officials. “The use of the flag by societies in cere- monies, its constant display in lodge rooms and parades bring all to the realization that this is America, their new country. “In the Americanization of vast numbers of foreign born, fraternal so- cleties have led all other institutions by bringing foreigners into fellowship with citizens. The obligation to the women and children of these foreign born members must not be underes- timated.” Officers of the congress are: Presi- dent, Henri Roy of Montreal; vice- president, Harry Wade, of Indiana- polis, Ind.; secretary, W. E. Futch, of Cleveland, O.; treasurer, A. E. King, of Cleveland. NEED SPECIAL LINER FOR CHICAGO ALONE Gothenburg Exposition Expects In- vasion of Americans Next Year —Prominent Pcople Going. Gothenburg, Sweden, Sept. 1.—So many Americans, many of Swedish birth or parentage, are planning to visit the Jubilee Exposition at Goth- enburg, Sweden, next year that a full sized ocean liner will be needed to carry the travelers from Chicago alone. These will include such rep- resentative citizens as the ex-gover- nor of Minnesota, Adolf Eberhart; Harry Olson, Chief Judge of the Municipal Court of Chicago, and United States Senator Medill Me- Cormick. This announcement is made by charles 8. Patersun, a business man of Ciicago who has come to Sweden to make special arrangements for this invasion of Americans. In con- nection with this news Dan Brostrom, ex-minister of the navy and a well known shipping man in Sweden, has announced that the Swedish-Ameri- can Line, of which he is president, will find it necessary to purchase a third liner to be placed in the direct service between the United States and Sweden. The Exposition at Gothenburg cele- brates the 300th anniversary of the founding of that city under the fam- ous King Gustavus Adolphus. It will {llustrate Swedish history, industry, and culture, a speclal section being allotted to,the exhibit from the for- mer colony in America, now the State of Delaware, which was settled by expeditions from Gothenburg in 1638.
