THINK LINGOLN' GRAVE IS LOCATED Kentucky Church Reported Build- ed on Historic Site Loulsville, Ky, July 21.—The area in which is the grave of Abraham Lincoln, grandfather of the martyred president and for whom the boy Lin- coln was named, is a circle fifteen feet In diameter under a corner of the Long Run Baptist church is the conclusion reached by the Rev, Dr, Willlam E. Barton, Oak Park, Iil, as the result of a recent visit to the church, Dr. Barton, who is an authority on the paternity of Abraham Lincoln and author of several books on the subject, came to Louisville in search of additional information to be used in a book he is writing. He was ac- companied to Long Run by R. C. Bal- lard Thruston, Loulsville historian and a number of other interested per- sons. After a search among the tomb- stones failed to supply information, & number of the older residents of the neighborhood were questioned. In KILLS PESKY BED BUGS P. D. This survey failed to disclose any tangible proof of the existence of the grave. This does not disprove the assertions of the older residents, Dr. Barton sald, be- cause only a small part of the ground could be examined and any tomb- stone or marker placed over the grave may have fallen away. The fact that the pioneer at one time owned land in Jefferson county definitely has been determined through records in the office of the county clerk. The Lincoln farm, ac- cording to the records, consisted of 467 acres and embraced what {s now the farm of Johnr Calhoun Bryant. After the death of Lincoln, the rec- ords show, one of his sons, Morde- cal Lincoln, sold the land to Ben- jamin Bridges. The graves of Bridges and his wife are in the Long Run church graveyard. The elder Lincoln, one morning in 1774, it is said, started from his home in company with his three sons, Mordecai, Josiah and Thomas. An Indlan shot the elder Lincoln from ambush. Mordecal ran back for his rifle, Josiah hastened to Hugh's Sta- tion, a fort not far distant from the scene of the ambush, and Thomas, the father of the former president, stayed at his father's side while as- slstance was being summoned. Mordecal is said to have reached his father's slde with his rifle in time to slay the Indian. Dr. Barton, as pastor of the Con- gregational church at Oak Park, has initiated a movement for the raising of funds among admirers of President Lincoln for the erection of a fitting tombstone at the grave of the Rev. Jesse Head, who, on June 12, 1805, performed the marriage ceremony for Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks parents of the president. The mar- riage took place in Washington coun- ty, Ky. Dr. Barton saild the grave had been located definitely in Har- rodsburg, Ky. VERTICAL RISING PLANES. POSSIBLE Naval Air Expert Claims Ma- chines Will Be Perfected Washington July 21.—The helicop- tor, or vertical-rising air machine, is not an impossibility, and should a real use for such a type arise guccess- ful one may he seen before many years, according to Dr. Albert F. Zahm, aeronautical expert for the Navy. Had there been a need for the helfcopter during the war, he said, any of several types could have been perfected, of which working models have been flown. Dr. Zahm {s an expert on design and construction of all manner of fly- ing machines. For years he has ap- plied his time to perfection of the air- plane, and is well gualified to pass upon the capabilities of any. Much interest has ben shown of late in reports of successful machines of the helicopter type being perfected, in both Germany and England. How- ever, while some flights have been made, none of any consequence are reported by a machine equipped with, horizontal propellers or revolving planes, designed to rise vertically from a confined space and descend on the same, That the helicopter is possible, Dr. Zahm said, is proved by the German machine, which, rising several times to moderate heights, has carried ob- servers, remained almost stationary while in air, and descended in safety. The machine, however, has made no extended flight, such as would prove its dependability, but was tethered to the ground by a mooring rope. At times, when the motors failed, the machine dropped and the passengers saved themselves only by leaping with parachutes. Experiments Go On The experiments are continuing, however, with the purpose of perfect- ing a motor which can be depended upon to maintain the machine without sudden fallure, the scientist explain-| ed, for, as soon a¥ the engine stoy glide to the ground as does an airplane, but drops vertically. In a proper descent the pro- pellors should be whirled slowly to ease the landing. Present hopes of attaining verti- cal flight rest mainly upon the en- deavors of Emil Berliner, Washing- ton inventor.
