Now the funds for the continuance of this work are beginning to run low. Captain Edeen has sacrificed part of his own personal salary several times, although he has a wife and family to support and no aid is given Salvation Army members personally by the organization headquarters. An illustration of how much depends on local support of the Army and its activities is shown in the statement by a former worker that a former lieu- tenant was forced to resign her position in this city some time before the local corps came here because of the failure of the drive for $5,000 held last winter, when there were not funds enough to procure satisfactory clothing and food for the workers. This officer, in order to get enough money to buy suitable clothing and food, left the army and procured a position in the city, which she now holds. Tonight, in order to help replenish the funds to continue the shelter home and charitable work, the Army will hold a lawn party on the grounds of the Y. W. C. A. at Hungerford court. The program, as worked out by Cap- tain Edeen includes a list of vocal and instrumental music such as the Army has built a reputation for, since the coming of Captain Fdeen. Staff -Captain M. Englestad, of Providence, R. 1., will have charge of the program. The Hartford Calva- tion Army band will be present and will furnish music during the evening. A delegation of Army workers from Hartford, New Haven, Naugatuck and other . nearby towns will be present and will provide vocal music. The New, Britain Salvation Army string band will be out in all its glory. Captain Edeen is anxious to have some local person contribute the use of a second hand Ford truck to use in gathering clothing and supplies for charjtable and welfare work. COMMUNICATED PREMATURE FIREWORKS Editor of The Herald: I should like to ask through your paper if there is any law against the premature celebration of the Fourth, and if so why is it not enforced? We are all willing to have noise on one day of the year, but when it comes to celebrating on any day and at any time, including Sunday, it gets very tiresome. It is said that in this country we need to have more respect for law. It is a good time to practice this with reference to celebration of the Fourth. True patriotism includes obedience to law and regard for the comfort of others. CITIZEN. Your last two paragraphs are to the point. Answering the question in the first paragraph—there are or dinances covering premature celebra tion of the Fourth—offenders may he arrested on a variety of charges.—Ed GOLF TO MUSIC. Lake Placid, N. Y, .June 23.— Rhythm enters in a large degree into successful golf playing and one may accomplish much mastery of the game through practicing strokes to phonograph music, Everett T. Seaver, president of the California state golf association and former amateur champion of the western states, told 4£0 delegates of a Cleveland firm in convention here. He demonstrated his contention by driving imaginary golf balls from an improvised tee on a hotel rug, at the same time indicat- ing how his movements in making the stroke should correspond with the tempo of slow waltz music.
