Wilson, brothers, were ar- rested on the charge of having in- toxicating liquor for sale and of hav- «ing smuggléd goods in their posses- sion. The whiskey, sixty-one cases, was found in a barn in the rear of the Wilson brothers’ saloon. It is understood that the customs officers believe that the whiskey is part of a big shipment from the Ba- hamas which recently was into New London on a tug. TAKE IN OVER 81, 000 Ladies’ Aid of Trinity M. E. Church Buys New Furniture for Church and Parsonage During Year. Over $2,000 was taken in by the Ladies’ Aid of the Methodist church during the year which has just closed, according to a statement made by Mrs. William A. Cashmore, treasurer, at the annual meeting yesterday. Most of this money was raised by the monthly supper given in the church the first Wednesday of every month. One thousand dollars was spent on church furnishings and $500 on par- sonage furnishings. Mrs. Richard Hulburt was re-elect- ed president, Mrs. F. E. Rackliffe, vice-president; Mrs. H. W. Gee, sec- retary, and Mrs. Wiilliam A. Cash- more, treasurer. DENIES BANK INFLUENCE Chairman of Union Pacific Says Fi- nancial Jnterests Do Not Control Railroads of Country. Washington, June 1.—Charges that a “New York banking combine* dom- inates through interlocking director- ates 82 per cent. of the nation’s rail- roads with 212,000 miles of track were denied before the senate inter- state commerce committee today by Robert S. Lovett, chairman of the Union Paciflc board. The charges were made recently before the com- mittee L Jett W. Lauck, economist for the railroad unions. “I know the charge is absolutely untrue and consequently there is no real evidence to support it,”” Mr. Lov- ett declared. He also denied that banking interests control the associa- tion of railway executives of which he is a member. Houses Burned. More than 30 houses were burned in the Milfileld and Peter’s Hill area of Belfast yesterday. Only the skele- ton walls of 13 houses in Boyd street remain. All the 14 houses on Peter's Place were destroyed while dwellings on California street and Woodford street were damaged by fire and looted. Today a public house Hill was burned. Heavy firing occurred near the Stanhope streét area, after which the police made extensive raids for arms. The barracks of the special con- stables at Crossmagler and Jackson House two miles inside the Louth- Armagh border, were attacked today by armed men, Heavy rifle firing ensued for a half hour after which the attacking party withdrew, agparently without casual- ties. The British destroyer Warwick to- day held up a steamer from Moville to Londonderry in Lough Foyle off the northern county Londonderry coast. The destroyer put police on board the steamer. The investigation by the police resulted in the arrest. - MURI]ER BHARGEI] PRIEST ON TRIAL Father Delorme Case of Montreal Before Grand Jury Montreal, June 1.—The grand jury of King's bench court today began consideration of the murder charge against Rev. Adelard Delorme, al- leged slayer of his half brother, Raoul Delorme, Ottawa university student. Young Delorme's bullet ridden body was found on the out- skirts of the city on January 7 and Father Delorme was accused of the murder after it was learned of the youth had taken out an {insurance policy at the priest's suggestion. Justice Monet in his charge to the grand jury instructed the jurors not to consider the defgndant as a priest. “You must not think of him as Father Delorme,” he said. ‘“You must think of him as Adelard Delorme."” YOTE APPROPRIATION Finance Commission of Chamber of Deputies Votes To Give 11,000,000 Francs to Defray Expenses at Paris Paris, June 1. — (By Associated Press) — The finance commission of the chamber of deputies today voted an appropriation of 11,000,000 francs to defray the expenses of holding the 1924 Olympic games at Paris. Deputy Noblemaire had recommended an ap- propriation of 15,000,000 francs but the commission found it necessary to scale it down.
