re— Secoml Section EVIDENCE ENOUGH 10 HANG ‘BIG T $0 Declares Prosecutor in Chicago Terrorism Cases Chicago, May 12.—Police and civic organizations today saw in the indict- ment of eight Chicago labor leaders and the state's attorney's threat to use against them the law invoked 36 years ago to obtain executions of the Haymarket rioters, a smashing blow at what they termed gang terrorism. Murder Indictments, In the first night session on record, a Cook county special grand jury re- turned true bills charging murder against “Big"” Tim Murphy, head of the “gas workers union”; Fred Mader, president of the Chicago building trades council, and Cornelius (Con) Bhea, secretary-treasurer of the thea- ter janitors' union, referred to as the “big three” of the viclous labor circle, and five others. The indictments are forerunners of scores of others, city and county officials said. More than 400 per- sons were arrested and but few have been released with the greater number denied freedom on writs of habeas corpus. Other Union Men Named. Others named in the indictments are: Isadore Braverman, head of the picture hangers’ union; Daniel MecCarthy, business agent of the plumbers’ union; Jerry Hogan, saloon- keeper; Thomas Hogan, former. police officer, and Robert McCloud, clerk in the building trades council. The eight are charged specifically with the killing of Terrence Lyons, acting police lieutenant. The slaying of Lyons followed the murder of Thomas Clark, patrolman on guard at a building which = previously had been bombed, police say, by labor men, because it was baing_ erected under the Landis award, a ®age de- cision handed down by K. M. Landis, former fedgral judge, which was in- tended to settle th edispute between contractors and labor. Have Ample Evidence. “We have sufficlent evidence to hang Murphy, Shea and Mader,” George F. Gorman, assistant state's attorney said, , following announce- ment that indictments had been re- turned. “Big Tim"” Murphy evidenced no surprise when he was informed of the indictments. “Anybody can be indicted,” he’'said. “They can even indict a man for con- cealing ideas. That must be the charge they have against me. “How can one conspire with guys I don’t know anything about?” + Accused Talk Freely. “As for the death penalty, it's been announced several times that men would hang and they are today walk- ing the streets free men. Poor old “Con" Shea is too old to conspire with anybody. We are as sorry for the cops as the officers. “The whole thing is splash.” “It's a shame,” Mader. It is not charged 'that Murphy, Mader/or Shea actually shot the po- licemen, but that they were involved in the conspiracy which led to the killings. Burke president of the interna- tional brotherhood pulp sulphide and paper workers declared today. Seven of the major manufacturers will not be represented in the con- ference. They already have signed with the skilled men and announced their refusal to treat with the un- skilled men a8 an international group. With the consent of the skilled crafts- men, they have declared common labor shall henceforth be paid ac- cording to prevailing rates in locali- ties where employed. Three so-called independent com- panies have signed separate wage agreements where the unskilled union men are considered on a par with skilled men. Four others are expect- ed to take similar action today. This union leaders assert will.leave the newsprint paper industry almost evenly divided, with wage agreements affecting every employee within 50 per cent. of the industry and the re- maining mills one half open shop.
