London, April 13.—(By Associated Press.)--The Bank of England re- duced its discount rate to 4 per cent. The last previous reduction was on I"ebruary 16 when the rate was drop- ped fgom 5 to 434 per cent. The reduction coming on the eve of the Iaster holidays wa 1 entire surprise to the money market and financial interests. Business {n Lom- bard street had begun without the usual “subject to lower bank rate,” which is usually posted when there is a possibility of a reduction during the day, and the belief was expressed that the action was prompted by the treasury which has been ruling the money market for some time past. New York, April 13.—With the ex- ception of Switzerland, Great Britain now has the lowest bank rate in the world as the result of the Bank of England reducing its discount rate to 4 per cent today. Switzerland cut its 4 per cent rate to 3% per cent on March 2 on account of the excessive gold supply in that country. The present British rate compares with a high of 10 per cent on August 1, 1914, and a low of 3 per cent Jan- uary 29, 1914, FISH COM. Lee, local superintend- ent of health, has announced that the week of Apri' 24 te 29 will be known ! as clean up week. The movement is one wherein precautions for good health will be taken and at the same time, the city will be beautified, It is a matter of civic pride that the city should rank high among the other cities of the state in cleanliness, and Dr. Lee intends to bring the matter before the public, so that property owners and rent payers will co-oper- |ate by cleaning their yards, lawns | and cellars of all dirt and rubbish. Aid By Children, The aid of the children in the schools will be depended on to pass the word from house to house. A cir- culgr in the form of g hand bill will be passed to each pupil ifi the schools and by this means, the majority of the adalts of the city will be notified that the work of cleaning up the city is on. The Boy Scouts will assist by going from house to house in the six wards, asking the people to suppor® the movement, and the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary club, the Boys' club, the American Legion and other organizations will he asked to take part in the movement. There are, no doubt, a great many of the people of the city, who make it a practice every spring about this time, to clean up the rubbish that ne- cessarily collects throughout the win- ter, but there gre also' g nup her of people who are careless aisut the matter and they let the rubbish col~ lect until well into the summer time. 3 00 , 1022, 5 — FRECKLES Don't Hide Them With a Veil; Re- move Them With Othine— JDouble Strength sible, to stimulate interest in clean up week and ho is assured that will have the co-operation all in the city, According to him, New Britain has always been among the first in New England to promdte clean yards and clean streets.
