Press)—Eamon De Valera during his tions between men and women prison- visit yesterday to Londonderry pre- ers at the New Castle county work- house have reached such a point that ‘Warden Mordecai 8. Plummer has established a jail postoffice and cen- sorship for love letters. “It was the logical thing to do,” said the warden. ‘Because men and women are in jail is no reason to think they won't fall in love. Lots of romances begin in prison.” Warden Plummer in an address be- fore the Wilmington league of wom- en voters, told of having -liscovered an “underground mail system’ in the workhouse. Notes in Food. “Notes were hidden in food, in ar- ticles of clothing or carried by ‘trus- ties’”’ he said. “Sometimes men sent notes outside to have them hidden in cakes, pies and candy sent later to the girls. “You can’t blame the men for fall- ing in love. There are some pretty girls in the workhouse. After they serve their time some of them may make good wives for someone. T know of one case where at least ten men are ready to die for one girl impris- oned here. Post Office Established. “Wink at the underground letters? I guess not. We have an honor sys- tem, so I announced there would be a post office in the workhouse and prisoners could write to each other. Of course the letters are censored. New Period Hostile demonstrations by the re- bellious section of the Irish republi- can army against the I. R. A. regulars have been reported with increasing frequency in the fast few days. These are often accompanied by shooting and the seizure of free state property but there have been no serious cas- ualties nor clashes on any considerable scale. The supposition in some quarters ls that the seceding members of the army are trying to provoke retaliation. If so, they have thus far failed, al- though the succession of aggravating incidents has created a dangerous tension. County Donegal where the republi- can leader now is, is the only pcrtion of free state territory in northern Ire- land in which he has secured foot- hold and he seems to be making ra- pid headway there. It appears from a proclamation is- sued by the officer commanding the second brigade of the first northoey division of the Irish republican army that De Valera sympathizers in the brigade held a conyention and decid- ed to break away from the regular army.
