Oh, T understand now what you mean about those slippgrs! You think that 1 wore them out to the garage last night in all that storm and did this terrible thing! Why could someone elge not have thrown them there under the bed, thinking that they would not be discovered until an op- portunity came to dispose of them? Why, if I were guilty, would 1 leave them where they could be so readily found ? “Why would anybody?” he count- ered swiftly. “Who else in this house can wear your slippers, Miss Tudor?" For an instant, as this irrefutable fact confronted her, the girl stood staring at him as though bereft of her senses. When she spoke her voice was carefully guarded. “1 had not thought of that, ser- geant, but you are right, of course. No one else in the family could have vorn them; but whether you believe . or not, let me assure you that I did ot wear them last night, or at any ime within the past two or threc tecks, and I am utterly innocent of ny knowledge of my cousin's death!"” “I have brought no accusation gainst you, Miss Tudor,” the detec- e reminded her. *“You have iden- fied the slippers as your former roperty, and though they are wet nd mud-stalned you assert that youl hve not had them on in weeks, That O 8T RANDER— the sherlff gazing with a puzzled ex- pression at Mrs, Tudor, who was re- treating up the stairs, “Have you discovered Barry smiled, I haven't!" sald the sheriff I've been talking to her for the best part of an hour and finally I managed to get it out of her, It scems that though her nlece, who is mourning for her brother that was killed at the front, wouldn't appear formally at the dance, Mrs. Tudor thought she caught sight of her out on the porch. Those slippers would be enough evider in themselves to send me to prison, I suppose, and that silly affair with Harry Cadmus two years ago, of which I have told you, would furnish a motive. Oh, it is like a horrible nightmare! To be suspected of such a terrible crime, and that against the little cousin I loved!" Her voice broke, as though she found herself unable to continue, and again the detective marveled. Was the girl a consummate actress, or was hers indeed the grief and humil- iation of being unjustly assailed? The captain evidently had no doubts on that score, for he took one of her hands in both of his, and she made no effort to withdraw it. ‘““That is what T have eome to vou this afternoon, to save you from the breath of suspicion, if T even can “Captain Warren!" Gassed! One girl had been killed by the inhalation of noxious gas, and the other, sleeping near, had gone unscathed—and there had been a gas mask in the house! Bargy entered the house back way and stole upstairs. The dimness of the room at first made everything indistinguishable to his eyes, but gradually he saw the mantel with the gas mask upon it. Approaching, he picked un the case containing the mask, carefully to pre- serve any possible finger prints, and as he opeéned it a faint but unmis- takable odor assailed his nostrils, the odor of carbon monoxide gas! CHAPTER IX. Sergeant Barry turned the gas mask case over and overs in his hands. His intuition had bden right after all! Iay Tudor was innocent beyond any doubt, for had she as- phyxiated her cousin she need not have gone to the trouble of donning the gas mask; she could simply have closed the windows ahd doors, al- lowed the carbon monoxide to es- cape, and left the room until it had done its work. As he took the mask from its case he noted that it had not been replaced in the proper manner, but had been thrust in with every evidence of haste. A careful examination re- vealed no finger marks upon the mask itself, but upon the case sev- eral were visible, He crossed the hall to the room in which the tragedy had occurred. There he commenced an elaborate search. His efforts seémed to meet with no success, for, shaking his head doubt- fully, he entered the bathroom, where he scrutinized the shelves and medi- cine chests. At last “he seized pasteboard box and closing half a dozen white powders wrapped separately in a filmy sub- stance resembling eiled paper. With a little exclamation of sati: his hand fell upon a tiny porcelain jar with a foreign and as he gingerly unscrewed the top a faint odor of fresh rose leaves floated out upon the air. Henry, of the New York police force, They were taken before the United States commissioners at Hartford and placed under bonds of $5,000 for their ap- pearance at a later date. The alleged counterfeiters were John and Anna Kowlaski, who rent- ed the tenement, and their two hoard- ers, Anton Zeniel and Valodsolf (‘os- okoskl. Neither of the persons had been in this country long. Raid Made. When the raid was conducted late in the afternoon, Patrolman Samuel Bamforth accompanied the raiders on the trip. The room contained three plaster of Paris moulds, one of which was used to make silver dol- lars and the other two for half dol- lars. The former had six impres- sions and the other had two. A crucible full of metal for the coun- terfeiting was also found. hree milling machines for rounding off the edges, a piece of sheet silver and sev- eral botties of ncid were zed. Sat on Red-Hot Coins, Mrs. Kolaski, at the time of the raid, quickly ran over to one of the moulds and sat down on it crying. She showed such restlessness that one of the officers investigated, and she was found to be sitting on hot mould. This was already singeing her flesh, having burned through her clothing. i busy in New Good Tmitation. The officers found the coins were an excellent imitation of the original dollars with the exception that they were a trifle lighter. All had been silver plated. The counterfeiters admitted their guilt and implicated one Anton Po- varvis of Gidding Block. He was later arrested. How Discovered. The discovery of the counterfeiting followed a Polish ball which was held in Hartford. Among those who at- tended were Cosockoski and Zeniel. They admitted having passed several of the dollars to the cashier without being detected and later, when the money was paid out for expenses, the banks found the spurious coins among the money. All Bound Over. The. files of Wednesday, March 11, 1897, show that the trial of all the counterfeiters was held at Hartford, where probable cause was found and all were bound over under bonds of $6,000 for a hearing in the next term of the United States District Court, the fourth Tuesday in May.
